I've been searching for a used loader, hopefully something like a Cat 941 or a Komatsu D41S. I'm not an excavator or a professional, so the loader will not be used for a lot of long hours. But I do want a decent machine, no "classic" junkers. Today I drove past a very nice looking IH 150 loader with a 4 -sale sign on it. It had a Drott 4-1 bucket with teeth (which looked to be in good shape), no ROPS (open seating) and no ripper. After looking the machine over, I spoke with the owner later and he said that it had been completely overhauled, rebuilt, refurbished, repainted etc. Just about everything had been completely gone over and replaced/rebuilt. The original machine was worn out and had been given to him and he restored it. Rebuilt engine, bucket, rollers replaced, master links rebuilt (tracks and sprockets original and good shape, according to him). Tranny fully disassembled and tranny gears/components replaced with those from a good used machine (he said water was in the original and had resulted in wear on the original gearset), clutch packs and steering clutches replaced/repaired/serviced. Tranny seals, bearings all replaced. Hydraulics all gone through and everything rebuilt/replaced. He said it starts right up when its 20 deg F out no problem everytime and everything works perfectly. There are about 450 hours on the machine after the rebuilt/refurbishment (and is what is indicated on the hour meter). He says he spent $20K on it. It did look very clean overall, but it was a simple once over from a know-not (me). What do you guys think? Are these decent loaders? Anything special to look for? And what's a fair price for one in this kind of shape? And how much would I have to pay someone to put a full ROPS on it and to buy a ripper and/or backhoe for it? Thanks in advance...

Sean, I find it hard to believe that a guy would put 20K in a machine that he knows would sell for more that 6 or 8 K . They wee good machines in their day and if it is in that good of shape it will do what you need done . Parts are becoming a bit of a problem , most are available but from komatsu you won't like the price. I think they doubled all the numbers when they bought the line. Send me an email . george

That's a lot of time/$$$ spent on an average unit. The D41S were a very good all-rounder,with good ripping ability...same for the 941.Depends on what you have to spend.Take an expert to check out anything you like...money well spent.

So it sounds like the upper price of an old non Cat loader like this (being a 1969 model), would be on the order of $7K? I don't want to insult the man with a ridiculous offer, but that's starting to sound like that's about it. Another thing that worries me is that parts availability is a problem that's only going to get worse in the future, and this will also obviously negatively affect any future resale price. And I'm not sure if he meant he actually spent $20k on the machine, or if he was including his and his friend's labor. It is hard to believe that he did spend that much for parts alone. Especially since the tracks and sprockets were not replaced. Still, it did look like a nice unit.
