Greetings to all!! I have a jd 70 skid steer. I was cleaning out the calf pens today and I noticed somethin' funny going on. The Exhaust pipe coming out of the right head was glowing red!!!!! !!! The left one was normal. The skid steer has a 23 hp Onan Twin. Anybody out there have any ideas as to what may cause this???The thing was running o.k.It will do this at full throttle. When I back 'er down it quits glowing? Can't figure it??? Thanxx and have a Good Night! Joe...

I'm not very familiar with Onans, but a hot condition can be caused by running too lean. It sounds like you are not getting enough fuel at full throttle. I assume it is a single carb. If so, and it is too lean, it seems both cyl's should be lean, not just one. Another possibility could be carbon buildup in the cylinder causing pre-ignition (pinging). Whatever, you need to fix it before you melt the piston.

I had one of theose for years and the Onan never did run right. I put a V4 Wisconsin in mine after several years of always tinkering with that Onan, made a much better machine. I agree with the other fellow about running too lean though. If you ever want to sell that machine call me. I really liked mine. (Joe 717-533-6199)
