TD9 / Dozer Maintenance recommendations

I'm just looking for maintenance pointers for a TD9. It's my first Dozer, I've ordered the manuals and plan on going through the maintenance recommendations therein. It's starting to rain so I sprayed some WD-40 and threw a tarp over it. I know I need to clean the air-filter, change the motor oil and apply lube (somewhere). I worry about the tracks, but that's 'cause I ride dirt-bikes and am used to lubing and adjusting the chain every ride. Also wondering how often to change the hydraulic fluids (if ever)? Any advice appreciated, Thanks!

Hi Marc. What year is your TD-9? The manuals will do you wonders. The Operations manual has all the schedules for what to lube, with what, and when to do it. I'd read that manual over and over. You will want to get a basic lube (grease) gun. I have one of the ones that you simply put a grease cartridge in it and start squeezing the trigger. You will also want to get a bucket pump to dispense Universal Gear Lube, that is used in may places. Buy it in 5 gallon buckets. If your TD-9 has the large "button" fittings on the rollers and idlers, then you will need to get a fitting for the bucket pump hose that will accomodate these fittings as well. Once you get the basic maint tools, keeping it lubed and adjusted correctly becomes a simply routine. Just don't get too carried away with the grease. The manual will state how many pumps on the gun etc. I have seen some TD-9s with grease all over the steering brakes, clutch area etc. That much grease is not required. Be sparing, but often. If it does not have an hour-meter, buy an aftermarket one, as all the maint schedules are based on hourly usage of the machine. I have a 1958 TD-9 91 series, fun machine. Good luck with yours. Feel free to ask any question you may have in the future. No need to guess with a 6 ton tool! Good luck, jim P

Thanks for the information! I had never heard of a 'Bucket Pump', but I'll be getting one for sure. Is there anything I need to look for when getting one, like a particular nozzle or something? My TD-9 is a 1965 (I think), the guy I bought it from wasn't positive. The serial is TD-9-92 5461 / 1855 ... but that's probably another topic. It's got a straight 6 Turbo Diesel with fuel injection ... pretty amazing technology for an old beast ... and seems to run good. Since you are familiar with the manuals, I'll ask another question: I wanted Operators and Service manuals. I order the following two manuals from this web-site: TD-9 Crwlr Dsl (92 Series) Operators Manual, 39 Pages (Part No: IH-O-TD9 92 SER) and TD-9 Crwlr Dsl Chassis Service Manual (T), 173 Pages (Part No: IH-S-T6,T9) I wasn't sure about the Service Manual. The other Service manual that was available was: TD-9 Crwlr (Technical Manual) Service Manual, Rare..333 Pages (Part No: IH-S-T6-TD18A) which the guy on the phone thought might be too technical. Is there any Service Manual that you would recommend, or is the Operators manual sufficient? Thanks again! -Marc.
