TD-9 Question

I just traded for an older TD-9, it has a variety of things(minor)wrong with it. While working on it I noticed that there is gear oil leaking from the drain holes in the hand clutch inspection plates. I have to assume this is gear oil from the transmission which leads me to conclude there is some type of gasket between the transmission and rear end. If my suspicions are correct I have a monumental task ahead to correct this problem. My question is this, is it worth the effort, or do I just continue to top off the transmission and live with the problem? Secondly, I would like to rinse off the hand clutchs to get any oil and grease off of them, how is this accomplished and with what, diesel followed with denatured alcohol?

I have a TD9 -66, and I have the same problem with oil leaking from the drain holes in the inspection plates. It was shown to be the gearbox input shaft seal leaking, in my case I have to remove the engine clutch to clean and replace the oil seal. The oil fills up in the clutch housing and then follow the brake pedal arms back to the drain holes. Dennis

Side story about a TD9: Working with the neighbors putting silage on a pile on the ground, I used their TD9 (without a dozer) to spread the silage by see-sawing the tractor back and forth. Didn't quite realize how steep the pile had gotten; I went to drive the TD9 back up on the pile going forward and hit the clutch just in time to stop the crawler from going over backward. Scared myself silly for awhile and came to the conclusion that it is safer to back a crawler up an incline.

National 415995 is the seal you need.

I think the seals either side of the bevel are gone...common problem,requiring pulling fuel tank etc out.I did one 3 years ago.lotsa work...I think the seals were like $13 each.There's better IH experts than me ,who will reply.My only advice..get the proper repair book & you won't go wrong.

With out looking at my book I would say it is the seals for the out put shafts. I would change the transmission oil and refill with the recomended amout of oil, you may try a little thicker oil say 140 weight or so. I would clean the clutches with brake cleaner, get several 3-5 big cans of the kind that evaporates quickly. Spray a can and move crawler, spray another can and move. You may want to have it hooked to a tractor or something to pull it while you pull the steering clutch lever to, stir/ aggitate the cleaner in the clutch pack. This is just a suggestion I have not tried this and don't know if it will work. I would just rather,personally, not put diesel or any other oil on the clutches and feel a cleaner would be better. Maybe put the plug in the cover pans and fill it half full with alcohol and drive it a short distance while operating the clutch. Again just a suggestion. After that check to see if you still have oil leaking in there. I hope this gives you some inspiration Mark
