I recently bought another engine, but out of a gen-set. How do I go about changing the injection pump and front and rear structure plate?

There is nothing to complicated to changing the fuel pump and front engine components. It is just a matter of taking them off and swapping them over. The big thing you need to do is to get the arrangement numbers from both engines and visit you local Cat Dealer and get a breakdown or build list for each engine. This information is all on the computer so it will not take them very long to research it for you. Then you need to compare the two lists ane see what all is different. You then need to swap all of these items. If my memory serves me correctly you are going to find more differences than just the fuel pump and front and rear structure plates.

Have you got the original engine for your machine? What shape is it in? Email me if you like. Later Bob

The engine has 2 cracked liners, cracked head, broken oil cooler bonnet, and alot of hours. It was cheaper to buy another running engine.I need to know how to lock the injection pump for re-installation on the other engine because it is a different application. Thanks for the reply. C McCain

I assume you have a precombustion chamber engine with a sleeve metering fuel pump. It has a plate covering the out side of it. It is pin timed, you can use the shank end of a new 1/4" drill bit for a pin. There is a small aluminium cover with an insulated terminal on it on the governor held on by bolts with 1/2" head bolts. there is one bolt/actually a plug with a 9/16" head. That is where the pin goes in. The best thing to do is to turn the good engine over untill the pin goes into the pump. there is a pipe plug in the flywheel housing near the starter marked 1 TC, take out the plug and you should get a 3/8"NC bolt to go into this hole and thread into the flywheel. If you want to be sure the engine is on the right turn take the valve cover off and check the #4 valves are both tight and the #1 valves are both loose. Take off the big round cover and slack the bolt in the pump shaft 3/4" hex. You need a small puller and two long 3/8" NF bolts to pull the gear off of the tapered shaft. HINT#1, get a couple of the heavy 3/8" flat washers used for the manifold to use on your puller bolts. Pull the pum off ot the other engine, turn it untill the 1/4" pin locks the cam shaft and install it. Thighten the bolt in the shaft to maybe 40 lb.ft.then take the pin out of the pump and torque the bolt in the pump shaft up to 100 Lb.Ft. Take the bolt out of the flywheel turn the engine over in direction of rotation CW from the front untill the pin locks into the pump shaft and will turn freely. Try to put the bolt back into the flywheel, it should go in freely.HINT#2 I have found that the flywheel bolt hole is usually a half hole out when I have finished doing this so when I set the engine upon #1TDC firing stroke to take the pump off, I back it up a bit of a turn then bring it back to near TDC and watch the hole in the flywheel and stop turning the engine when I see only a half hole showing. If this doesn't sound like your fuel system I am talking about Email me a pic of what you have on both engines. Later Bob
