I have a chance to buy a D3 dozer that has been sitting for a couple years with the engine out. (broken timing cover) The guy wants to sell it as is. What year is it? #7940803 The track rails are about shot. The rest of the machine looks pretty good, no cracks or bad spots that I can find. Should I be concerned that the engine has sat this long? Would there be any clutch issues after sitting. I don't mind spending some money on it, but don't want to buy a "money pit". I can buy it for around $2500.00, maybe less. Thanks for any help or advise!!

Just find out what it cost for chains, shoes, rollers & sprockets maybe bushings and pins if they can't be turned. Add that to the $2500 and see if you still want it. Are you going to do it yourself or have it done? if you have the equipment to do this yourself then you might get by for $6,000 What do you want it for? Just personal use around the farm. You could just go ahead and drive it to destruction and maybe still get several hundered hours out of the machine. Get someone who knows about carriage life and have them evaluate.

Kurt, All Cat products have either a single or double diget number followed by a letter or letters in their serial numbers. You should also try to find out how many hours are on this unit as this will give you an indicator about what kind of life is remaining on the rest of the components ie torque, trans and final drives. As for your question as to what is it worth you need to do the following. First find out what a comparable machine is worth if it is up and running and what is one worth if it has new or low percentage of wear on its undercarraige. You now have a base to work from to determine if it is worth persuing. Take your initial purchse price and add to it what is going to cost you to repair the engine, replace the undercarriage plus what ever else you find is wrong to get it to an operating condition so you can put it to work. How does this amount compare to your starting figure. This should tell you if it is worth buying or walking away from it. I hope this is some help to you in your decision making.

Kurt, unless you are in the track rebuilding business, walk away. You could lose money, even if the guy gave it to you. The owner most likely would have made the repair, if it was not a loosing proposition. Don't walk away from a worn out under carriage. RUN!! alvinnms
