Don, I have a 7u that was built in 1950 and a 7u that was built in 1958. You have to look down on the left side of the motor for a plate with 3 bolts or studs holding it to the bell housing. My 1950 dosen't but the 58 did. Thats where your starter will go. I just purchased a starter from Thill Track and Tractor (715-832-2128)in EauClair Wi. Deno sold me the starter, master disconnect and starter switch for $550. I had to come up with 40$ worth of battery cables. I also had to grind the head of the top bolt from 15/16 to about 3/4 to make it fit cause of solinoid. I was having problems using the pony motor so I said screw this crap and bought the starter. Money well spent. If you are going to use it in the cold you will need to run the pony motor to warm up the diesel or Thill can sell you a glow plug setup. I did'nt but I'm thinking about it. I put the starter on last month. Hope I was helpful.

Don, 7U's were built from 1947 to the end 1959. Your 7U12996 was built in 1951. As for the conversion cost. Try the www.ACMOC.org BB, that question is being asked all the time. Paul Wasilla, Alaska

Hey Don, according to my CAT book the 7Us were built in 1959 only. As for the convesion the best I could offer is a guess. If you bought the starter and found the other necessary parts to adapt it, and did it yourself then I'd venture a guess at around $600 to $1000, give or take. I remember Dad doing the conversion for a customer years ago on one of the bigger CAT dozers, I believe it was a D8, and best I remember it was somewhere between those two figures. Like I said though I can't swear to it, it was just too long ago. Hope this at least helps you some. Wayne
