Bought a semi-trailer for storage. There is a used Caterpiller engine in it. The tag says: Model 1693- 6-cly -bore 5.4 -stroke 6.5 -325 H.P.- Another tag says POWERUNIT. Trailer was part of an estate [owner dead] so no help there.Wondering if it has core? parts? value. Any thing would help pay for trailer&moving. Thanks.

Ed that is a very good engine. It is the truck version of the D343 and the grandfather of the 3406. Later Bob

Ed, is it just an engine by itself, or is it a complete skid mounted power unit with radiator, etc.? If this is the case does it have a PTO on it? Either way is it a complete engine or does it appear to be missing parts, can you turn the crank or is it locked up, etc, etc, etc? All of that is gonna effect how much it's gonna be worth to somebody. You might try posting it on the HCEA site, or IBDozing.com, or one of the other sites geared more toward the heaver equipment. If your interested in getting something out of just the engine as a core, your probably not gonna have much luck. The last time I went to CAT with a core, I had a complete, older but still fairly popular, truck engine. They said they'd give something like $150 basically to take it off my hands, but that was it. Reading between the lines what they actually said was "We'll screw you out of it because we don't actually need it that bad right now and may have to store it a little while, but when somebody does need it we're gonna screw them too and make a killing on parts." That's about typical for the dealerships nowdays. There are enough new OEM and aftermarket parts out there so it's just not as economical for them to take in used parts, especially engines, and try to refurbish them as it was in years past. CAT has started a new service now selling some used parts as "CAT Classic Parts" but from what I've seen it doesn't extend much beyone wear parts like undercarriages, etc. Usually with something like a running takeout on an engine they are gonna stear clear if for no other reasons that warranty issues. Hope this helps some. Good luck...Wayne

If you could get it running you might get some big $$ for it. Those things make good power plants for gravel shakers etc.
