I'm looking at buying a 1987 Ford 550 backhoe for farm use only. I'm really not familiar at what to look at but from what I can see, the hydraulics seem to be strong, cylinders are not scored or leaking, hydraulic lines are in good shape, the engine (3 cylinder diesel) was rebuilt by New Holland last year and started up immediately in 38 degree weather, the sheet metal is not too beat up, the pivot pins throughout the machine are in fairly good shape and comes with 2 buckets and a homemade forklift attachment. Now the not so good items include the tires are nearly worn out, both the loader and bucket are worn pretty thin, the gear shift (although it will go into gear and stay) flops around when its not in gear and the tach does not work. From what ya'll see here is it worth $5000.00 to $8000.00? Any good or bad comments on this model of machine is welcome Sorry bout the long post but I'll always check the water before I jump in!

Look at the swing chains real close.. for cracked links or missing links.. Those chains are $ 600.00 to replace

Im not too familiar with a 550 but Ford makes a good hoe. I have a 75 3550 and have been offered what Dad gave for it 7 years ago 7500 I cant sell it as good as it has been to me lol. I just sold An english 74 MF 50 backhoe for 8500. THey bring a good penny. I currently have a 75 4500 ford hoe for sale for 5500 the highest offer on it is 5200. I may take it if my trade on a 4000 farm tractor comes through.

A friend of mine just bought one, in, from what you describe, the same condition. It has a cab. He paid $7,500 and we're in Central New York State. He'd been looking for quite a while, so the price was reasonable considering the market. Backhoes around here have been high. I was just offered $6000 for my old Pettibone Multihoe (looks like a Dynahoe and has a Detroit 3-53 engine). I've been wondering if I made a mistake, and should have taken the money. But, I need a big hoe around, and don't know what else I'd find for $6000.
