Hey guys, just looking for any help ya'll can give me in finding a conversion kit to put a starter on an old D311 engine and eliminate the pony motor. This thing is out of a 212 CAT grader. If anybody has any idea where I might find one, or any other info that might be helpful in finding any of the needed parts I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for any help, Wayne

The starter itsself is not the problem, most large truck starters(12V) can be adapted with the proper nose installed. The snag is the starter drive,it is not a straight tooth, but an angled tooth. Cat can supply one but they are spendy.Possibly a starter shop familiar with older Cats can help you out.You can fabricate an alt. mount, use a HD12V alt and put on a longer belt. If you are not going to change over the nozzel holders to ones that take glow plugs, you will have to give it a shot of ether since you don't have the pony to warm up the big engine.

Thanks for the info. We are working on this engine for a customer who wanted us to change it over if we could, or depending on how things were price wise, simply rebuild the pony instead. After doing some more calling around today, we found that converting it wasn't gonna be but about $150 more than rebuilding the pony as bad off as it was. All total it's gonna be right around $1500 to get it converted. Bad thing is the main engine had very little compression so we pulled the head today too. The old girl had been setting too long when Tony bought her and had gotten alot of water inside over the years. Now what started as a simple conversion has turned into a complete rebuild. Thanks again for the help. Wayne
