I have two different pieces of property, one is a forty that I live on and the other is 160 acres that is located 100 miles away. I am looking at getting a small dozer that I can pull with my Diesel pickup and 12,000lb trailer. I basically want to do a little cleanup around the place I live and want to go down to the 160 and build some food plots for the wildlife. A lot of this land had been previously logged so any re-growth is still relatively small, 6” average. I am not a mechanic nor do I want to be one so the machine that I do buy has to be dependable. Any suggestions from the professionals????

Mitsubishi BD2G or H, Komatsu D20?, Both great newer machines that weigh around 9000lbs. I bought a 1996 Mitsu BD2H with 1300hr for $12000. Ive used it hard for almost 2 years w/o anyy problems what so ever. They go for anywhere from $7500. for well used to about $15000 for newer and under 1000hr.

I have a Komatsu D21A-7, 1999. The unit only weights 8700 pounds and is a sweet little dozer. PAT blade, 12 steel tracks, hydo steer. Quite expensive though. I do have one with only 484 hours on it, if you are interested, email me. Flange.

I have 2 350C's dozers, 6-way, and a 450C loader/hoe, 4-1. I have 2 ranches that I use my tractors on and find that the 350's can do most anything I have a need for. They are great tractors and I use to tow the 350's with a Chev 1 ton w/ a 350 motor/ 4-speed. I now have a Ford F-450 1-ton that does a whole lot better. Something to keep in mind for the average land owner. The 450C loader is 15,500 with rippers which is my towing limit in the mountains, much more I start getting pushed. If I need the 450 w/ the hoe moved,I hire. Cheaper than having a bigger truck. I would like to sell one of my 350C's. Let me know if you would like details. I bought a new Deere skidsteer 250 and it produces much more clean up type work than the 350C. So, I no longer have a need for 2 of them. E-mail me at magcj2@aol.com -Mark

I think the Case 350 or 310G is an great small machine no steering clutches plenty of power inexpense to fix and buy parts for. under 5 ton Late 350 with 6-way and rops about 9500 lbs full I say if you are not a machanic the early dry clutch deere's are a pain And if it wasn't for Deere I'd be out of the parts business...hahahaha

I did the same thing last year. JD350 bumper pull & 1 Ton diesel dump dually. The refurbed JD came with a #93 backhoe quik tach on the back with a cemetery bucket $10K. The dozer will push (snap off if froze) a 6" sapling. Tasks were to build trails carve out a pond & fix drainage away from house addition. Incidentally it also pushes around an empty 9.5X8X40 hi cube container 10Klb with authority - I wish it would lift it.

I'd go for a JD350. Find one pretty much worn out cheap (up to $2k) and have it refurbished by a reputable guy. You'll end up with about $10k in the machine, but you'll have an essentially new machine for a third to a quarter of what you'd pay for a new one. I don't think anyone even makes a comprable size machine today. Just make sure you have an electric brake set up on the trailer and take it slow.

I run into stuff from time to time. If I find another beater for cheap, I'll post it here. (I'm not a dealer by any means, and I don't need two crawlers...although I found a D8 that's pretty tempting, but I want to stay married.)

I'm wondering if equipment goes for less in Maine? I watch the classifieds, but who knows how the private sales go. I'm in central New York State, and JD 350 dozers, worn out from one end to the other, still bring $5000 if they have an inside blade. Even the 1010s go for almost that much. I've wanted to buy a 350 for years, back to when I worked for a JD dealer. Prices seem to be nuts though. Worn out machines for $5000, and good ones up to $10,000. My neighbor is selling his farm, and his old 350 is sitting in the barn with the final drives off of it. It's an early 350 diesel, sold new as a "loggers' special." Inside 6-way mechanical blade, clutch driven (no hydraulic reverser), and winch. It hasn't been started in 10 years, lays there apart, and the undercarriage is completey shot. So far, he's been offered $4500 for it, and will probably get more. I gave up looking and, this spring, bought an Allis Chalmers HD4 with 6 way blade. Undercarriage is shot and engine needs a rebuilt, an I paid $3600.

Sounds like your not going to be pulling anything heavier than a John Deere 350 or 400, International 500, Allis Chalmers HD4, etc. They were all pretty good machines when new, now it all depends on the conditon. I don't know too much about new equivalents. My opinion for a good, smaller, all around dozer is the John Deere 450 series, but that's a bit too heavy to be pulling around with a pickup truck.
