I recently purchased this dozer. has a six cylinder diesel engine. I think it is somewhere around a 1961 model. It was supposed to been overhauled(top half). Holds excellent oil pressure and temp is normal. It starts easily but is missing and smokes black smoke bad. It gets better as far as smoking when it warms up but still splutters and pops. At low idle it purrs like a kitten. I cracked each injector line to pinpoint which cylinders was missing. It seemed like #3 dont hit at all and some of the others didnt make a whole lot of difference but did seem to effect the running somewhat. I pulled #3 injector and took it to dealer for a pop test. It popped at 2100 lb which is what the book calls for. The mechanic said that the spray pattern was somewhat coarse but said he wasnt sure that it might be normal for this machine. When i got home i swapped this injector with another and started the dozer. it still didnt seem to be firing on #3. I also hooked the injector up to the line out of the engine and started it. It would pop and spray pretty strong. Any ideas on where to go now? If the dozer was out of time would it still fire on #3 cylinder? If i pull the valve cover would i be able to see any problems? The heads and injectors were supposedly rebuilt. I would appreciate any advice on this matter. thanks, ron

If this has a bosch in line pump, which all i have seen have, it may be the delivery valve is bad. this is where the line attaches on the pump. these will delay injection and cause a miss at higher rpm. talk to a good fuel system place and they should know procedure to replace it. don't mess with it without talking to them as if you do it wrong, you can mess up the pump or it may run away at startup [scary!]

Ron, I'm no diesel mechanic, but have a fair bit of 'redneck-osity' from working on cars for years...so here's my two cents (and that's about what its worth!) If you're sure its not firing on number three and it's definitely getting fuel, then maybe it has a compression problem? Maybe it has a stuck or burned valve(s) and/or the ring(s) are not sealing properly? I would measure the compression on all of the cylinders and then see how they vary from number 3. Please remember I've never worked on a diesel before, so I might be way off...but internal combustion is internal combustion and if you've got fuel, fire and compression (and timed correctly) you got power...one of those must be missing, and since you have fuel, there is no fire (sparkplug), that only leaves compression and/or possibly an injection timing error...don't know how those engines are timed, but can you check for that too? Maybe someone hooked injector lines up mismatched, or the injector timing is retarded?? Good luck...
