I have a freshly overhauled GM 2-53 mounted in a John Deere 440 Crawler. It does not have a thermostat. The engine runs very cool in my opinion. Does it need a thermostat and if so, where can I locate one. I bought one from the Detroit Diesel dealer local but it does not fit. What is considered the normal operating temp for this crawler.

Check with your local JD or JD construction equipment dealer. They still sell parts for these units. I know from experience. Good luck.....

Definitely need a thermostat. It goes just behind the upper radiator hose in the thermostat housing. You can't miss it, it looks just like most other thermostat housings, unless your crawler has been modified. Look in your parts book, page 20-4, item #6. Deere part number for the thermostat is 3146695, but that is a Detroit number, Deere just uses their number. Gasket is a 5121257. Lavoy
