the M11 (8.3) cummins has got to be one of the biggest turds of a truck engine ever built. hope its got lots of gears behind it, you will need it in hills, flat land aint bad. To get any real horse from a cummins means moving up to the N14 and it gets awful heavy if you ever have to back in anyplace soft. I think if you look really close you may also find the ford motor is an IH DT466 in disguise, kinda like the powerstrokes.

Scotc, M11 and 8.3 are not even related ! L 10 and M 11 are similar as in 10 liter and 11 liter. 8.3 is a C series consolidated diesel and is big brother to the B series that is in the dodge pickups. L 10 and M 11 work well in single axle trucks but none of the above is big enough for a tandem truck running in hilly country . NT series cummins has the HP and torque to handle a tandem and last , last one I had in for repair had 633,000 miles of dump truck service before needing overhaul, was not dead then just worn out. george

Well id go with the 7.8L i know a guy that had one and never had a wrench on it depends on how you treat them... good service and you will get a good engine but from what the other guys say go with the cummins personaly i dont like cummins there like Cat (yellow hand grenade) and cummins are in the same point to (black hand grenade).... but if you really want power put a 6V71T in it if you tune it up right you can get 300 H.P and have lots of power to and good on fuel. i know a guy that did that to a F800 and has very good luck with it he has put on over 600 000 Km and never had a to do any thing but clean injectors and change oil and filter... and he bags that truck...

Go with the Cummins, my F-700 service truck has the 6.6 Ford diesel a size smaller but built similar to the 7.8 no wet sleeves and very expensive parts, the 8.3 Cummins is a real diesel with replaceable wet liners.

I would go with the 8.3L cummins, mainly because of the name they have. The 8.3L in a tandem dump application should be setup for atleast 350hp and with aftermarket parts you can get 425hp out of them. I don't know much about the ford engines but I am guessing it is the same scenario.

Carl, Unless you have all down hill running , neither one is big enough for a tandem dump. On flat land a 300 cummins will do , if you have any hills get 350 cummins or larger . In this area the guys run 400's and 444's. The last on I overhauled out of frame was a 444, we put it in to replace a 300 . Owner said it sure did level out the hills. george
