420C sprocket removal

Trying to disassemble my 420c. Pulled the six bolts out of one sprocket with no trouble, but there's three rivets still holding it on. Manual is worthless. Am I supposed to grind off the inside end of the three rivets or what? Also, masterlink won't budge. Even with a pretty good hid with a sledge and lotsa "penetrating oil". Hesitant to put the oxy-acetylene on the track link. Don't want to anneal it, if it's got a heat treat on it.

(Is there any penetrating oil that really penetrates? WD-40 and Kroil don't do anything. When I finally get a bolt loose, the threads inside are dry as a bone, even after spraying repeatedly for months. Might as well use soda pop...)

one thing i, forgot to tell you roll the tracks to where your master pin is about centered under the front idler this will give something solid to drive the master pin ,also the driver will work better if you have hold it and use a big sledge hammer ,wear real good pair saftey glasses!

on your master pin heating with the blue wrench wount cause a problem to the tracks if they are not sealed &lubed style , you need to make a homemade pin driver ,you find two pices of round solid hard steel ,the one that you use for the driver just smaller than master pin about 18" long and the other about 3 to 4 feet long weld them in tee shape use as amaster pin driver

Thanks all. Got the tracks off without pulling the m-links. Now I can soak 'em good, and get a proper backup on the link when I slam the pins. Will use the gas-ax as last resort.

Sprockets came off pretty easily. With the tracks out of the way I could swing the sledge clean. Needed to know that those were dowels, not rivets before I started beating on things.

Thanks again. YT is a lifesaver on this old stuff.

be carefull where you buy the pb blaster one place was going to charge me $8.59 a can and i can buy it at miejers for $3.79 it does work better than w-d 40 good luck

Joel,
A large gear puller works well to get them off. Tighten till there is a lot of pull, and then hit the backside of the sprocket with a hammer.
Heat the master link, it is the only way it is going to come off, it won't hurt anything.

Joel,
I recently took the sprockets off my 420c. The things you see which you think are rivets are dowels which fit very tight into the sprocket. The sprocket will come off but will require you to hit it from the back side. I used a piece of wood along with a sledge hammer and would hit the back side of the sprocket the rotate 90 degrees and repeat, working all the way around. It may take awhile but the sprocket will come off.

Hi Joel, I'm sorry I cant help with the sprocket,But I can with the other, Napa carries a product called PB-blaster, It has worked alot better than any other that I have tried. even when in a hurry you will normally get two threads penatration. Good luck with your sprocket. Duane

I have a 40C, I presume however that splitting the tracks is the same ie: punch out the master pin
I found that because there are only two bolts holding each grouser to the links, when you drive on one side
the other side of the link twists around the bolt jamming the master pin.
by braceing the oppersite link with a length of pipe into which the master pin can be driven the pin pops out real easy.

I have found that using a come-along to take the tension off the tracks helps greatly. Also when putting the track back I use the come-along and a plank to carry the track ends together.
