I was doing some dozing, after a couple of hours I noticed the dozer was beginning to get slow to build RPM when the throttle was opened. I figured it was time for a new fuel filter. I replaced the fuel filter, checked the air filter amd the lift pump. I moved the dozer a couple of hundred yards seemed OK, maybe a liitle down on power. In about 10 to 15 minutes it lost nearly all power, would not go much above idle at wide open throttle. Barely got it back to my shop in low gear only. It died a couple of times. Would restart immediately and I was able to get some RPM and after about 20/30 seconds the RPM would begin to fall, also seemed to have a slight miss. I suspect the injector pump but I am not very knowledgeable adout diesel engines.

Yeah, could be the pump - but check some simpler items first. When I worked for a Deere dealer, we had a fleet of over twenty 450s and 350s. The kind of problem you describe is a very common one. First, you didn't mention HOW you checked the fuel pump. If your's has a primer handle, and that's how you're checking it - no good. Often the arm-linkage where the pump rides on the engine camshaft gets worn out - so it won't pump from the engine turnig but WILL pump with the hand primer. Check it with engine cranking. Very common problem is where the fuel comes out of the tank. Take the line off the shut-off petcock and see how much fuel comes out. The size of the hole in the petcock is barely large enough for a baby flea to crawl through. With a lot of our rentals, we had to put a standpipe in the tank with a small sreen, and install a petcock with a larger opening. If you get done checking all the obvious, take the timing window off your pump (little rectangle facing out and held with two screws) - or take the return-fuel check valve off the top of the pump. Look to see is there are little black specs that look like mouse turds. If so, the weight-retaining dampening ring from the injection pump governor has come apart. Fairly easy to fix, and can be updated to a newer style that will never come apart again.
