Thanks to you guys I have traced the problem that was causin the hot fluid. I feel a little foolish....er a lot foolish. This machine has a detachable backhoe and it seems to be plumbed straight in to the extra lever meant to control a 4 in 1 bucket or a ripper. There is not anykind of diverter valve, it all seems to work all the time when the backhoe is hooked up. Welll I had unhooked the hoe and coupled the two hoses together that normallly run to the hoe. I had made a cover to protect those two hoses in brush since they dangle out the back of the machine, so I didnt notice that these two hoses had come uncoupled. That is what was causeing the hot fluid and the constant load on the engine. I replaced the filter in the hydraulic tank and cleaned the screen. All that is fine now. Problem: Now the bucket wont lift at all at an idle speed. It goes up very slowly at about half throttle but will not lift much of a load even at fulll throttle. Any idea what I did? I hoping it maybe just blew a relief valve. The bucket roll seems slow but a little better than the lift. Do you think i cooked the control orings etc? Can you check the relief valve any way or do you just replace it with a new one. Your help now appreciated more than ever.

I have to agree with all posts. As for a pump I had good luck with precision fluid power in OK city, OK: they kicked everyone's backside for price here in NY. Pull the pump, do a quick teardown and inspection- I don't think it will take long to discover your pump is toast. Good luck.

Ok. We are about to have another snow storm so I will get into it and post a followup of what I find. All this helps and I am grateful.

My sneaking suspicion is the hydraulics were incapable of building full pressure before the hoses came apart, preventing the pump from self-destructing instantly.

John, they shouldn't have come apart on their own, they may have had some dirt on them and not locked up right or might be worn badly. Clean them and check they are free and lock solid. If they are worn at all replace them before they cost you another pump, these couplings can cause a lot of grief some times. Every time before you start, check they are hooked up incase someone was trying to jerk you around too. Later Bob

The relief valves in the 450 control valve come apart easily unlike a lot of newer machines that use nonservicible cartridges. I suspect, though, that you blew the spider-gaskets in the pump -or worse. From what happened, I'm suprised you didn't blow the pump center housing in half. It used to be a common occurence (at least common to a Deere mechanic). The new center-housing used to be available as a separate part, but not anymore. In fact, I've got a brand new pump from a 450 crawler loader that, basically, has never been used. Years ago, a guy did just what you did, but blew his pump. Without realizing what the problem was, he came down to the dealership, bought a new pump, put it on, and instantly blew it upon starting the engine. I've had it sitting on my shelf for years, hoping I'd find a good center-housing for it. Anyway, back to your pump. Probably a Cessna? Early on,Deere used a few cast-iron Webster-Electric Co. pumps, but after that only used Cessna aluminum pumps. Simple to get off and pull apart - but you cannot buy major parts for it. You CAN buy the seal, wear plate, and gasket kit. If your're lucky, that's all you need. If you eyeball the pump, try to see if the oil seal on the imput shaft pushed out or if it's leaking now. If it is pushed out, that shows it exceeded it's pressure rating. Subsequently, if you pull it apart the spider gaskets may be blown (which can be fixed easily) or the center housing got chewed out (which you won't fix). If the pump is the problem, and you don't think it's repairable, there are lots of other pumps that will fit right on. Many places, like the following sell them: Link As I recall, the 450 loader uses a 23 gallon per minute pump and the dozer uses a 13 gallon per minute.

friend had a 450 case and he did the same as you with the hoe hoses and it burned his pump out just to much of a over load
