Just got a AC forklift in the shop, never been near one before. According to the model plate it is a I-600, has a 4cyl gas engine. The problem is with the engine, it is in need of a overhaul. I pulled it and have it torn down and it's going to need a full overhaul. Unfortuantly I don't have any parts books that make any reference to this thing. From the looks of it it could be either AC or Continental, local dealer isn't any help either. Only reference I could find at all was in a old Sealed power book that made a reference to a "G-153" engine. I can't find anything else. Can anyone help me with information regarding what this engine is and a possible source of parts? Thanks! MONGO

The I-600 should have a G160 engine. The only other thing that uses this engine is D15 series 2 . Rebuild parts are expensive but they are availlible. I also have one of these forklifts. When I got involved in doing the engine I was too deep into it to stop. If I had known the cost of rebuild I would have used a G149 engine as replacement. G149 has same external features but is very common and 1/2 the cost to rebuild. If you need any info or parts sources email me and I will look them up. Chuck

Thanks Chuck! This engine had a dead cylinder and extremely low oil pressure. The guy who owned it drove the air intake cap down tight on the pipe! No wonder he never needed to choke the engine! When I opened it up I found that it had been rebuilt fairly recently, piston fit is still fairly tight however the sleeves exhibit scoring and some odd wear patterns (a nice wear ridge on only one side of the liner!) The bottom end is interesting as well....the crank and bearings show signs of dirt in oiling system, in fact there are some nice tracks from debris coming out of the crank oiling holes and working its way out of the bearing journal. Rods are already .030 under and mains are .020 and the fit was extreemely loose. I didn't plasticguage them but the rods nearly rattled on the crank. Another thing was the air intake pipe from the air filter housing to the carb was full of rust. The loose flaky kind...no wonder the cylinder walls look like they do! This is going to be a pretty much complete overhaul and I'm a little aprehensive of what its going to cost, never mind if I have to come up with a crankshaft as well. What equipment did that G-149 engine come in? Thanks so much for the info...this thing is pretty rare around here! MONGO

The G149 engine was availible in D14 and D15 tractors as well as other applications. They are ussually in good supply in salvage yards or as reman units. It may have a little less power but I don't think anyone will really notice in a forklift. Chuck

The I-600 should have a d-15 engine, look to the right of the carb there should be a machined surface with engine number should read 160##### Should be easy to get engine parts . Tony

Thanks Tony!!! I don't get into AC a whole lot, I've done a bunch of AC tractors WCs, WDs, and the newer bigger stuff 7040s, 8060s etc. This was driving me nuts! Do you know off hand what the displacement was on that engine? Thanks again! MONGO
