I have a D4 in bad shape and need to completely rebuild tracks as sprockets are worn and have been welded on before. links are worn through. It is a narrow track version. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm assuming yours is an early D4 6U ( made from 1947 to 1959 ) based on the S/N. I would suggest taking some clear up close photos of the U/C compenents and posting them on the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club (ACMOC) website bulletin board. Link is posted below. I would also suggest you measure your undercarriage components and compare the measurements of new components to get an accurate percentage of wear. From what you describe, it sounds like it has a lot of wear, but measuring is the only true way to determine, the eyeball method cannot compare to measuring. You may still have some components that may not be 100% worn, and may be useable, saving you some $$. If not familiar with how to measure an U/C, ask on the website as well. If you post the results, you will have illustrated a clear picture of what you have and what options may be available for re-building existing parts, if it is feasible compared to buying new, finding serviceable components in boneyards, or a combination of all 3. There are some very knowlegable people who frequent the ACMOC site that know undercarriages. There have been many discussions on the subject in regards to quality, durability, and economics of undercarriage replacement(meaning where your money is best spent and for what quality) Ie. CAT vs. Berco etc. I'm not sure what is still available from CAT, or what the modern equivalent is through conversion to modern parts etc., someone will definitely know. Also consider your application, if you are an earthwork contractor or a weekend warrior or just taking it to shows can help justify what you need. U/C's are expensive to replace, sometimes more than a tractor is worth. Also not saying this site is lacking in any way, just good to broaden your horizons, if you describe what you have, you should get some good advice no matter where you ask. I see a few of the CAT guys over here sometimes. Just trying to be of some assistance, Good Luck !

Try posting over at www.acmoc.org. There is almost always someone parting out D4's and the likes. If not they will be able to point you in the right direction. Good Luck! Paul
