I just received my JD 350b on Friday, 1/2/04, and did not have time to do anything with it other than drive it off the truck and park it before it got dark. But I noticed the hoe kept slowly creeping over to the right. I would bump it back over to the center but it would creep right again. Is this a leaking valve or is there an adjustment to set it to stay in the center? Or atleast stay put? What do you think it is? Thanks, MrBill

Is this the one we discussed earlier with that awful barrel swing cylinder in it?

Hopefully you're sure it's not gravity doing it. Those barrel swings cylinders usually have a lot of slop both on the inside (vanes and barrel) and on the outside (splined connection). If it's hydraulic, check and make sure the springs are working properly on the swing hydraulic control valve spool. They return it to neutral position after you've hit swing-left or swing-right. If the spring action feels okay, the spool might be worn or scored enough to be letting pressure oil into the cylinder when it's in neutral position.

After having my JD worked on several times I sold it and bought a Ford. I have owned two Fords and they never drift, but will dig and go through boggy ground much better than Deeres. Flak welcome. alvinnms

No flak, but you've got to compare apples to apples. I've had many Deere hoes and presently have a Ford 4000 Industrial, Pettibone LBA, and Case 580CK. Any hoe can get worn no matter who makes it. Over the years Deere has made large hoes, small hoes, hoes with open-center hydraulics, hoes with closed-center hydraulics, hoes with barrel swing cylinders and hoes with conventional swing cylinders. Some were certainly better than others but Ford had their share of bloopers too. I don't doubt you've had a couple for Fords you like better than whatever Deere you had, but it's likely, whatever Ford you have now, Deere made one as good at some point in time. In my opinion, many of the newer Deeres got overly complicated, and at the same time, had less lifting capacity. During the late 80s, we lost quite a few Deere customers who would normally buy a new hoe every couple of years. But, they began to find out the newer machines would not do the work of the older machines, especially 410 series owners. A lot of our customers gave up on Deere and bought I.H. or Ford instead.

reminds me of a friend of mine who says my fords are junk, and his chevy is the best thing since running water. bottom line is....theyre all good, when they work, and they all suck when theyre broke. however, some are definitely easier to fix.
