My Bobcat 453 (used with 500 hrs) hydraulics quits after ten minutes usage. What should I look for?

its tough to troubleshoot with the limited amount of info given, but, if the hydraulics seem to be locked up, look to see if all of your interlocks are active, if you have the green light panel next to the seat, are they all lit? if the hydraulics just get weaker, and then puke, try your filters before suspecting the pump, 500 hrs is an early death for a pump, unless it suffered damage. also, check to make sure there isnt anything stuck under the pedals, i used to get mud buildup under them in the winter quite often. oh, one other thing, i used to have a 953 bobcat, and the fuel, and hydraulic caps looked identical, but on opposite sides of the machine, better make sure noone put fuel in the hyd. tank by mistake. good luck, jim

Thanks jim, the hydraulic fluid is clear and clean, there's no obstruction under the pedals, but the hydraulic fluid cooler is missing andd bypassed. I'm guessing that ten minutes is all it takes to overheat the fluid without a cooler. I'm installing a cooler even the tranny overheat light never comes on while running.

maybe, but 10 minutes seems awful quick, in this cold weather, even if you're working it hard, plus the tranny temp is another strike against the theory. ya never know tho, it should have the cooler in any case, so i'd go for it. you didnt mention the filter, did ya change it? and this might seem a stupid question, is the resevoir level up? it seems to me i had an operator once that swore the level was good, but a quick visual showed 1.5 gals low. heres another thought, does the machine travel ok? the 2 systems share fluid i believe, and the hydrostatic pumps and motors will be more sensitive than the gear pump to pressure, and temp anomalies. lemme know, and good luck, jim

My guess is a hydraulic pump, a worn pump will pump cold oil with some degree of success but as the oil heats a worn pump wont pump.

I knew a guy that told me he ran 90- 150 wt gear oil in a worn out hyd pump for years. Never have tried it. alvinnms

Given the price of a pump, it's certainly worth a try!
