Most of the time these "low hour" crawlers seem suspicious, but nonetheless, they do exist, may be difficult to actually verify, but if you think about how many tractors & equipment was manufactured since the 30's, there is a ton of iron in this country. People let things sit or hold onto them forever after buying newer, take into consideration how much has been " dragged out of the weeds " and how much is still sitting, finding them is half the fun ! I bought a 1945 CAT D-7 with 993 original hours on it, was left over from the government and had 2 owners since auction in 1970 with 0 hours. I have no reason to believe any different, the hour meter works properly, ( was never removed or tampered with), the U/C measures up as well, the grousers have less than 1/2" worn off, and the rest of the U/C is very close to new, hardly any wear. The seller was a real nice honest guy, I bought it sight unseen ( fool ! )it was represented well, and he immediately sent good photos of the U/C, so as the saying goes " A fool and his money are soon parted "! In my case I made a character judgment that I was right about, not always the case. I paid under $5000, and had it shipped 1200 miles. Around here someone would try to get double that, so was best to broaden my search. It ran fine, both motors seem tight and the diesel fires up easily, nothing suspect so far, I am replacing the master clutch ( it went, close to 60 years old & the dry clutches were the only real weak area on these) and will have to change all oils, in the finals, trans etc. thorough lube, + a lot of other little items, so it's not without a little work to get it back in good running shape and have everthing looked over properly. I don't recommend the practice of buying sight unseen, but quite often you will find deals out there, at least worth investigating, just as much as you have people out there, trying to sell machines with good U/C's that are shot. I have seen many for sale that were priced right and worth investigating, and others that were plainly obvious to run away from. I was fortunate to be familiar with this particular, model, I have an earlier one same s/n run, with a ton of hours on it. I think after careful inspection of a potential low hour one, you should be able to tell if someone is trying to rake you over the coals. Oh well, enuff out of me on that.... buyer beware, never forget that !
