All right I know dump trucks are not part of this site, BUT if you care to comment your thoughts would be appreciated. I am looking at two dump trucks, both are well cared for trucks, I am suprised at the care the trucks have been given. Owner operators. My question is what is the difference between the trucks, the company made the two trucks different for some reason rather then producing only one design, care to comment what the difference are between the two trucks. One is a 1993 Ford L9000 16 foot box, 9 speed, very low actual miles, CAT engine, the other a 1990 Ford F900 14 foot box, 9 speed, very low actual miles, Ford diesel engine, both have heavy specs for axles, They are similar. Why or whats the reason for Ford to make two diffent series of trucks? The L9000 truck is twice the price of the F900. I will be purchasing one or the other truck.

Regarding the purchase of which one, if possible to try each one under loaded conditions would be the best way to determine which to purchase. Just a load of material hauled in the box probably won't seem like a lot of difference however put the trailer and hoe behind and the "L" will be your choice hands down. The "L" will most likely have the 3406 engine. Unlikely to be the smaller 3116 or the 3208. No question the "L" would be the much better choice. just a better choice for what you want to do.

The L series is considered Ford's heavy duty line the F is a mid-range truck, the L should gross weight much more than the F.

Gatractorman will you reply to this memo? I am interested in the F900 dump truck. Costs less. Do you think it will work for what I will be using it for? 12 front 42 rear axle, Hendrickson RT2-400. 4.3 rear ratio, 240 HP Ford Diesel, the 7.8L engine, Eaton 9 speed with 4 low, 14 foot box 11 CY. I will be using it with in a 50 mile area of the shop. Most work will be within 10 miles one way. 65% blacktop roads 30% gravel roads, 5% gravel pits and off road. Hilly land not flat but not mountains either. Will be used to pull my 16,000 lb earth moving machines on a 5,000 lb tag trailer. Haul gravel. Would this mid range truck be able to do this work? or will it be under powered and too small of a truck to do this work. Would you sugest I go with the F900 or the larger L9000? If in the future I get a large 35,000 lb excavator and larger tag trailer will the F900 be able to pull it? Also I read your reply to the Ford engine question what have you heard about the 7.8L Ford Diesel engine. What do you mean by expensive parts? Thank you for your thoughfull input.

Wow I never saw an F series with a 42k rear axle, that certainly qualifies as heavy duty, sounds like the F series would work well for what you have now and what you will be using it for, you are probably going to be wishing for more HP with 11 yds. of gravel on it but who doesn't wish for more HP? As long as it moves the load and dont hold anybody up very long it's fine, I believe the 35k excavator will be a stretch for the F I dont think I would try that, the 6.6 and 7.8 Fords are sister engines with the 7.8 having a slightly longer stroke, different pump timing and injectors, so alot of parts are common between the 2, I cant remember the exact total cost of the rebuild but a couple parts that stuck in my head were, head gasket a cool $100, fan clutch $250, think piston ring sets were $50 per piston, they are very good, long life, high mileage engines I would not hesitate to buy another, my F-700 has no kind of heater for cold weather starting but yet it starts right up.

Hello Gatractorman: Thank you for your replies to my email questions. Today I looked at a F800 Ford Truck near where I live. The F900 dump truck I am thinking of purchasing is in another state, havn't gone to look at it yet. Big Question for you, I was surprised at how small the cab is on this F800 truck. The seat is a bench and the top of the seat is only 12 inchs off the floor. Is the seat in your F700 service truck the same? My knees were up in the air when I placed my feet on the gas and clutch and brake peddles, is this your experience also? How does some one drive the truck all day like this, do you drive the F700 truck yourself, if so what are your comments on the small cab, please don't be brief, e-lab-a-rate on what your thoughts are concerning the cramped work area. I have Mack and International trucks, I have never been in a truck cab so small, Pickup cabs are larger, I'm just shocked that Ford would build a cab so small.I am 5 feet 8 inchs tall and I was not comfortable in this cab. What input you give will most helpfull. Sincerely, Robert

Have you considered purchasing one of your ex-state dump trucks? I purchased a pristine 5yd dumper, with the DT466 and an Allison tranny. Absolutely love it.

the L9000, is the better truck, and the cat is probably the better engine, see if its a cat 3406 engine, and then make sure its not the throwaway version, if its the industrial 3406, it'll outlast the truck. which one to buy is a matter of how much you intend to use it, how far you will travel, and how long you hope to keep it in service. anyway ya look at it, its a judgement call best made by the guy who can see and here the truck run. and then ya just hope for the best.good luck, jim

Robert, find out which Cat engine is in the Louisville, Ky. built Ford? There is no guarantee that either one won,t give problems, as they all do too soon, rather than later. I assume they both have air brakes, thats a must hauling the heavy loads. If you want tt know the best truck for dump hauling, it would be a R modle Mack of course. Feedback, flak welcome. alvinnms
