Does any one know about Ford 7.8 liter diesel engines. I asked around and have been told that they are a bad engine. That the parts are hard to get, you wait for the parts. And the parts are very costly. The Ford truck dealer says the engine is a good engine, the parts availablity is excellent no problem and the cost of the parts are no different then any other engine parts except for the 270 HP engine those pistons are expensive. I am thing of up grading to a newer truck and one of the trucks I looked at has this Ford 7.8 liter engine. Havn't purchased a truck yet. Would appreciate any input you folks can send my way.

I've got the 6.6 Ford in my F700 service truck, the engine was bad when I bought it (234,000 miles) it had broken a piston ring, just one of those fluke things, nothing wrong with the design of the engine at all except it does not have wet sleeve liners, but thats the same as those Cummins pick-up engines you hear so much about and they work pretty well, parts were expensive but not hard to find, mine cost alot to build but I had a bad turbo and fan clutch as well, both things you wouldn't normally factor in a rebuild, mine's underpowered but it's hauling 20,000+ lbs. anywhere it goes, I'm happy with mine I'd buy another if opportunity persents itself.

Gatractorman Thank you for replying, what horse power does your engine have. What rear end ratios and transmission. You stated under powered, what do you mean?

My 6.6 is only 180hp, dont know the rear end ratio and a straight 5 speed, the truck is not setup just exactly right for where I live (Northeast Georgia Mountains) with the straight 5 speed I have huge jumps from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th, a 2 speed rear end would help alot then I could split those big jumps and it wouldn't seem so underpowered.

I have a 90 ford F 350 4 dr dulley. It had a 7.3 international diesle with banks turbo. It had 135K on it so far and still runs perfect. I havnet heard of the parts being hard to find.I was told that the engine is good for atleast 350K.as long as its maintained. The new fords dont have the 7.3 they come standard with the 6.0 engine. I havent heard much about them but I would think they are as good as the 7.3 just not as much power.
