What are some of your thoughts on the John Deere 550A. Will it clear land and build roads? Does it have wet or dry clutchs?

I'm assuming you are looking at one for sale ...my initial thought is to tell you to look for another machine...when new 550's 550A's and 550B's were ok machines...now that they are getting older, a transmission failure...which is not uncommon can render the machine suitable for a scrap yard...the parts cost and labor involved in repairing those transmissions is extremely high.and many times not cost effective...If there is one for sale with a new bottom ( 97 %) I'm sure there are underlying issues with the machine...I'm sure they didnt spend the money on an undercarriage and then decided the machine was making them too much money and decided to sell !!! I've seen numerous steering clutch failures that contaminated the transmission oil and resulted in transmission failures...and another thing to keep in mind...NEVER trust an hour meter ...

Thanks Johnathon; Makes sence to me. I just wanted a machine that didn't cost too much, to build a road and clear some land. I could pay and have it done but I want'ed to do it myself. What type of machine would you recommend for this application?

I'm familiar with Deeres so I'd lean towards a 450...the newer the better obviously...but they are more readily evaluated and are more common ...not that they are bulletproof..they do have their problems..as does anything...but the problems are usually more obvious and more easily corrected..don't know your price range...and with a crawler..its best to have someone check it out who is familiar with them...there are a lot of variables that can make you wish you hired out the job...
