I have a friend with an older Cat D6, serial number 0AA7340, and he was wondering what year it would be? He suspects early 60, but not sure. Does anyone know where I could find that information? Thanks, David in SC

Thanks Wayne and Billy. My friend is going to check again today and I will re-post tomorrow if he finds anything different. Thanks for your help. David

Hey David, according to the CAT Performance Handbook. your serial number should start with one of the following: D6-- '47-59= 4R &4U..... D6B--'59-67=37A &44A..... D6C--'63-67=74A &76A... D6C--'67-76=10K....D6LGP--'72-77=69U That's all the D6 prefixes they list from '47-'77 for machines made in the US. They also list all models mfgd in other countries but none of those have a 0AA prefix either. I also looked and didn't see any of the other models with that prefix either. There was a #6 that was made from '53-55 that had a 10A prefix, but that was a loader. Hope this helps..... Wayne

Someone will have it over here if before '47 might want to double check, that S/N again Wayne, I think the D-6 8U & 9U were '47-'59, 60" & 74" Gauge respectively.

Billy your right on the 9U on the '47-59 year models. That was a hunt and peck mistake on my part...sorry... it was 9U not 4U. I just did a double check and everything else is dead right, straight out of the Caterpillar Performance Handbook put out by CAT. As for the 8U they don't list any of the D6s with that prefix either USA mfgd or otherwise...like everything else though, that doesn't mean they didn't make them, just that somebody probably forgot to put them in the manual.... We've been told many times over the years that a part we were holding in our hand, or a whole machine for that matter, didn't exist, and that by the mfg that made it. Nothing suprises me anymore. Thanks for then link, at first glance it looks like a good one.

Nice group of people over there, some have quite the resource library as well. Everyone over there is very helpful, extremely knowlegable on CAT's and always willing to lend a hand, great support for owning, restoring, repairing an old Caterpillar. I've seen a few of them over here helping out, between all these discussion boards, really great resources available. If you go to the archive page, there is a pretty accurate S/N start listing and years manufactured for track type tractors. The 8U was the narrow gauge S/N prefix 60" center to center of tracks Vs. the 9U which is 74" center to center of tracks. No doubt about some books lacking or having correct information! In any case, just trying to fill out the blanks & be of some help when possible.

Being able to help out when we can is what it's all about. Nobody has all the information all the time, but if enough people help then eventually you'll get everything you need and maybe learn a little extra too.
