My brother is about to go look at what is described as an early 60's(?) Cat 933. Is not a turbo, and only has hand steering. One steering clutch reportedly is out, other side is fine and we are wondering about possible causes. Does anyone know if these are wet or dry clutches? Has been a farm use machine that still has tight bucket pins and tracks. Anything else to look for or help ID the model closer?
Thanks,
Stan(VA).

make sure the shaft that goes down into rearend housing is moving free. gets stuck and does not let the clutchs fully engage. its all part of the steering clutch linkage you can see this by looking at the back of the machine under the seat

Hi Stan,
I too run a 933 (Traxcavator) and have repair, part, and best of all, an owners' manual. Cat's not very good at supplying parts or information but should have clutches. I have yet to touch mine. Check your ID# and I'll look at my manuals to see if they match. Get used to standing on your head working on the insides. Don't know where you are but STAY AWAY from L.E.Woods in Fishersville. After a $4700 transmission rebuild I got 18 hours and a locked up transmission. Lots of promises but they finally refused to fix their work. Turned out they forgot to torque the last three bolts and it took out a $1000 custom reverser gear no longer available from Cat. Seems Woods has a reputation of refusing to fix their mistakes. Wish I'd known before. Nice strong, if slow, machines after you get used to the hand clutch. Good luck.

I have an early 933 that had the same problem. What I found was that the turning clutch drum had lost all the splines that hold it onto the shaft. Wha thad caused this was a gentleman running it for me had pulled the clutch and then let it spring back forward numerous times. This part is available but be prepared to pay. Also when you remove this drum be sure not to pull the clutch backwards after it is removed or the clutch discs will rotate and fall out
