Hi, I found a late 60's-early 70's John Deere 450 loader that a guy really needs to get rid of. He says it has 500 hours on a complete engine OH at which time they added a turbo.? He says it purrs like a kitten, but his father poked a hole in radiator several months ago and has sat since. Says it has not more than 200 hours on new sprockets, track pins, but needs bottom rollers. Has ROPS, but not sure if it is factory. Says hydraulics are good and has oversize bucket. Was used for some time to clean chicken houses. hmmm - corrosion? Says his father overheated the tranny a couple of times because he did not like running it at fast throttle. Has minor leak in right rear drive. Would this have wet clutches? I hear dry are bad. This person swears this is an excellent machine and needs money to settle estate after his father passed away recently. Can be had for what seems to be a very fair price based on the ones I see sell on eBay. I go look at tomorrow, have only talked to on phone. What specifics do I need to look for? I need to use this to burn stumps and brush on 10 newly cleared acres and dig basement. I have a 763 Bobcat I bought last summer, but it just does not have enough power to move some of the stumps I need to move. And rocks. All stumps have been pushed up. Is this a good machine? Any advice appreciated. Thanks, David in SC

I have heard that bottom rollers are $200 each. That seems high to me. Can they be reconditioned? That would be $2000 to replace all 10. Whew!! What purpose do bottom rollers serve? They have obviously been using it with them worn. Will that cause premature wear on the tracks? How about the radiator. Man says new one is $800. Is that true? I think this one can be fixed if it already has not been. The old fella started brazing it up (just 2 dime size holes) before he passed away. He also mentioned that it could be re-cored for about $300. Myself, I think it could be repaired for under $200. Thanks so much for all of your help so far. I sometimes think I have something wrong with me. Do not know what the medical term would be, but I like the though of taking this thing apart and fixing all of the things that are not right. ?? Thanks, David

Well i went and looked. Turns out it is a 450C, so I assume it has wet clutches and slightly more power than earlier models. It has been used though. Guy's father owned it for 18+ years. Says he once used it to clear a 40 acre tract. Engine is fresh including new turbo and clutches. Some hydraulics rebuilt. Has factory ROPS. Has factory winch, but bottom covers are missing and shaft to winch has been cut with a torch. Why? New tracks and front rollers and sprockets. Needs bottom rollers bad. The rail braces are welded to the rails on both sides and he says it has various other structural welds on bottom. Just whenever they had covers off and found a crack, they called in a welder. Has minor leaks at the hoses/lines coming out of spool valve. Says they rub and every so often you have to take one off and braze it up? Had a 4/1 bucket, but now has oversize tooth bucket. No idea of the hours, but he guarantees it runs and performs great. He just does not have $800 for new radiator. He will help me get it back together as it sets in his front yard. Minor other leaks and needs paint and a good cleaning. Clarification on tranny overheating. He says it will do it if you work it hard at low RPM and then it will quit pulling good. He did not say they did that and caused any problems. Does that sound normal? He says that is typical of any hydrostatic drive system. Is this a hydrostatic drive? Asking price is $6K. Is that too much. Thanks, David

450C is a powerful machine for it's size. But, no . . it does not have hydrostatic anything. Has two transmissions; one is gear-driven range transmission with four speeds; and the other is hydraulic with clutch packs with high, low, and reverse - thusly known as an HL-R. So, you have high, low, or reverse in your choice of four ranges. Steering clutches are also clutch driven, wet, and activated by hydraulic pressure. None of the hydraulic clutches either in the trans. or steering are supposed to slip at all under any conditions. There is a dry engine clutch that isn't used much and can slip. Sounds like the machine has some serious problems and I can't tell from here if the trans. is slipping, or the steering clutches, or both. There is a common situation in that particular machine that can make everything slip because of low-pressure. There is an adusting rod that has a relationship with the mechanical dry engine clutch linkage and the transmission hydraulic control vavle. There's a 5/16" (or maybe 3/8") aduster nut on it that tends to come loose, and when it does, the pressure runs too low. If the machine has been run a long time like this it's probably got some damage. I wouldn't pay $6000 for it, but that's me. If it was a dozer with a 6-way blade, I'd consider it. From what you describe, the winch is next to worthless, track-frames are welded to the crossbar support, radiator shot, needs new bottom rollers, needs radiator, and perhaps a transmission job and steering clutches? If you had the work done the repair bill would be more then the asking price. Now . . if you want to use it "as is" and maybe get something done with it - in my mind you're back to a $3500 machine (at best). In fact, it might be worth more in parts than it is to fix.

Hey,you JD guys...a bit off the topic, but I hear all the bad stuff about early JD stuff & was wondering if the newer ones sell in any numbers. You don't see many later model dozers/loaders running around in my part of Australia. Are they that bad???I had a chance to operate a 755 loader for 3 mths & found it to be a good pusher, but never see the new ones anywhere.

Which version 450? Makes a difference. Early 450s were dogs. 450Bs had slighty bigger engines and were a little better, late 450Bs with the bigger bore, Keystone piston rings, and factory turbo were much better. As far as the transmission goes, I don't know what the person was talking about as far as running slow and overheating the transmission. Transmission felt hot, or actually got damaged? The HL-R transmission isn't cheap to work on. If you're not doing the work yourself, nothing is cheap to have worked on. From what you described, it's kind of hard to tell what condition the machine is actually in. If it's a 450B turbo, with bad trans, radiator, bottom rollers, and steering clutches - I wouldn't pay a dime over $3000 - but it all depends on what you want I guess.

it's a dry clutch if it was made before 1973. I'd think it could do the work. Just try it out & check right & left steering. if the main clutch & steering (dry) clutches are good, its probably ok.
