420c Final drive

I found a casting # on the final drive of my jd 420c.(M3687T) Does anyone know if this is the stronger final drive? If this is not enought information, could someone describe the visual diffrences between the two drives? Thank you -Josh

Look at your final case and see if it has 4 large ribs cast into it that go from the edges of the case toward the axle. If so, you have one of the heavier final drives. If not, you have the earlier final that was used on 40's after 62,264, and on 420's before 100,000. The ribbed case became the sub number for the 40 and early 420's after it was developed for the phase two 420's, then the earlier case was discontinued. None of the finals would likely break under normal useage, it is usually abuse and lack of maintenance that caused them to fail. If you rebuild your finals correctly, and maintain them, it is unlikely that you will have any trouble. Lavoy

that is the right one for a 420-430--i don't know what you mean by stronger one the 40C one will fit but not te right one. ralph

I was under the impression that the final drive was redesigned after serial # 100001 because it would not hold up under normal working conditions. Where did you find the casting info? Thank you -Josh

all 420's the same no # brake by the parts book plus been wrecking out these for 30 yr's ton's of parts. where dp you live? ralph

Maine, I don't think need the final drive yet (I hope). but I'm going to dig into it next week I'm sure I'll find many things wrong. The engine base is full of watter (frozen) not sure if there will be any problems. if you have parts for sale let me know how to get in contact with you, chances are you'll here from me. where are you located??
