First off, let me thank everybody who responded to my earlier posts about manuals etc for this machine. I appreciate the time you spend helping me out. Now that I have the machine (before I get the manuals) I have a few simple questions regarding basic operation that I'd like to ask. 1. I've been told not to use the brakes to steer (or at least only use them to make very tight turns). Is this because it wears the brake lining or does it cause wear on the steering clutches? I've been warned that the brakes on these machines often do not work. I can get around using the brakes okay but I'm curious why they often are found not working? Is it that people tend to use them too much for steering and wear them out or is there a design weakness? 2. To the left of the steering levers is what appears to be a transmission high/low range lever. Is this correct? If so, which position is high and which is low. I got this lever in some sort of "neutral" and had a hard time getting it back in gear while the engine is running. Is this something that is only changed with the engine off or am I missing something here? 3. I've pretty much got the hang of steering with the steering levers. I assumed that to steer I simply put the "inside" lever in Neutral but in practice this did not seem to be very effective. I found that running the "outside" track with the lever in the forward (fast) position and the "inside" track with it's lever in the back (slow) position works much better. Any problem with steering this way? 4. I'd like to know what some of your favorite parts suppliers are. Many thanks, John

the foot brakes are not made for continous turning they are for close quarters only or they well waer out fast. also they have two brake cyl. one for each side that like to leek. the lever on the floor is the hi-low use it in low lever forward. you should shut the engine off to shift this lever. use the power shift one lever in low other in hi but you can put one in neut.but it will not turn as well

While in Ohio on business, I bought a 1981 Case 450B this past summer and hate to turn if off. This is a great dozer. Many thanks to Marlowe for helping with a recent braking problem. Marlowe will forget more about dozers than I will ever know. If the Hi-low range is in Low, the transmission has first & third gears. If it is in High, the transmission has second & Forth gears. My brakes work great but are rarley used. The manual says to NEVER change the range slowly while running. Place the controls in Nuetral and move the Hi-Low range quickly. As Marlowe said, I would only change this lever with engine turned off if possible. Good Luck. I have put off buying a Maintenance manual and need to.
