low oil pressure at idle 450 case

I've got an early 70's model Case 450 which recently had an "in frame" engine overhaul. The dozer runs great; but oil pressure goes to nothing when idleing (when hot). When starting (engine cold) I get 60+ PSI, and as I get to operating temperature pressure drops to below 20PSI--even going to 10 at pretty good RPMS. If you idle all the way down it heads to 0. Could this be a worn oil pump or more likely mains or camshaft? The engine doesn't overheat or show any negatives. Would a worn oil pump show good pressure when cold? I know some engines had oil pumps which didn't have good longetivity. I don't know whether this is the case with Case. Any insight would be appreciated.

Low oil pressure is often caused by worn bearings or oil pump. You could have high cold pressure with both worn bearings and pump. /Dennis

This dozer was bought off auction--I knew the old dozer and expected to do only injector work to level it out. I rebuilt the injector pump first and had injectors replaced. It still ran rough and started blowing oil out of muffler. I did am in frame--new pistons, rings, rod bearings, sleves, wrist bearings. I did not turn the crankshaft, as mechanic said it didn't need it. I did not mess with the cam shaft. I did nothing to the mains. My idea was if this didn't do it, then I'd sell it. I've changed oil and filters twice (as I've run it this much). I examined the oil pump and screen by dropping the pan. The dozer runs like a top other than low oil pressure reading at operating temperature. . The engine runs smooth and uses no oil between changes. I changed oil guages and that doesn't seem to help. So I guess I'm down to camshaft wear, main bearing wear, or worn oil pump. Whatever it is the viscosity of the oil affects the pressure--I've got 60 PSI at start (even ideling). It takes about 15 minutes of running to get to 10 PSI.

Don't forget about the rocker arm shaft. there are usually cup plugs installed in both ends of the shaft. If one is missing it could cause your problem. My advice is to run the engine with the valve cover removed and observe the oil flow @ the rockers. Of course I would do it while the engine is hot and exhibiting the symptoms.

So look at oil pump and pressure relief valve. If pressure relief has ever had anything stuck in it and held slightly open it will wear, like a leaking tap washer, cutting away the seat, leading to faster leakage when hot and when oil pump clearances are probably reducing the pump output. Is it a gear pump? If so a look at the endfloat will reveal it's condition and maybe reducing shim gasket thickness, or whatever, to get it into spec. may help. These are relatively cheap (and easy?) options to look at first. Regards,RAB

Could be oil quality, pressure relief valve, worn bearings, worn pump, blocked or poor oil filter, or maybe even a dud guage. Tell us more of what you have done already, like oil changes, filter changes, when did it start doing this, quickly (recently) or over a longer time frame, etc. Btw, does it have a low pressure warning light and if so, does this come on as soon as the engine is stopped, a few seconds after, or before? Regards, RAB

you said a in frame overhaul and if this was done the crankshaft bearings should have been replaced . i will put money on your cam shaft bearings. i have three 450s with 188s in and i have over hauled 2 of them and both had real bad cam bearings but they had around 6000 hr. each. there are a lot of reasons for low oil pr. and i could tell you all kind of things but with out better history it hard to say. mine will go down to 15psi. when worked real hard at idle. i use shell rottla 15-40 year around
