I missed the JD450C that some of you gave advice on this weekend. Sold before I made it with money. So, I called the local equip auction and they had one selling tomorrow. Went tonight at closing time to look. Having never operated one, I asked for help. Few minutes later, up drives the auction mechanic with Ford F450 full of goodies, batteries, welder, etc. Said he had been at it all day since weather had been cold, jumping dead batts. I asked him if he would crank it and demonstrate it for me. He jumped on and batt was dead. Hopped off and backed his truck up to rear and hooked up cables. Nothing. Forgot to hook cables to his jumper. Climbed down and hooked it up. Another auction rodee walks up and the mech asked him to hit the key and fire her up from the ground. Apparently last test rider shut her down at close to full throttle. Engine started right up, purred for about 1 second and jumped into reverse and plowed right into the mechanic's truck. Never missed a beat and pushed it about 15 feet before mech was able to grab key and turn it off, a move I did not want any part of. All 3 of us were shaking in our boots and thanking the man upstairs that nobody was standing tween the dozer and the truck. Wow, I never knew those things could move so fast. The lever was in the neutral position. Mechanic said that has never happened before. Must have slop in linkage. I will never ever warm up my Bobcat any more without being in the driver's seat. It just ain't worth it. Please be careful out there. Needless to say, I am not planning to bid on that possessed 450 even though it did look new. DAvid in SC

Yes, that's a common problem for all the crawlers Deere made with the HL-R transmission, including the 2010s and earlier 450 series up to somewhere around the 450C vintage. When I worked for a Deere dealer, we had to do hundreds of recalls and subsequent updates. Update entails #1 fixing all the slop in the linkage, #2 creating, with a metal saw, a "neutral gate" for the four-speed range transmission, and #3 replacing the hydraulic shift-valve spool for the HL-R hydraulic transmission with an updated version. John Deere was searching all over the country trying to locate every machine with the HL-R they had made. I'm sure they missed plenty, they're often impossible to track down. Deere probably still offers the update.

DAVID I read recently that john deere had a class action lawsuit years ago on the 450c that pertained to that exact thing happening. I heard that the dealers had a recall that would replace something in the linkage from reverse to neutral to make the distance smaller. The slop in the shifter can account for the thing that happened to you. Guess they mean it when they say never start unless you are in the drivers seat. I have a 450c that I like very much. RICK

Heard of a somewhat similar story. A guy had a 420 John Deere crawler, and leaned over the back of the seat to start it to lift the bucket to get a chain out from under it. Was in gear, started right up, and backed over him and crushed him to death. A 420 is not a big crawler, but way bigger than a person. Lavoy

Good gravy what a scare. That could have so easily been a real tragedy.

"Looked new" and "auction", two things that together uaually spell trouble with a machine. When it comes to heavy equipment,a new paint job or an extremely clean machine usually means the seller has something to hide.....Wash off the leaking oil and hide all the bondo..... . Not to say that that it's true 100% of the time, because there are still good, honest people out there that do it just because they take pride in their equipment. But truth be told, a fresh paint job and no oil or grease visible will sell a machine quicker than anything else, especially at an auction where the bidders don't always get a good look, and are usually anxious to buy.... Glad nobody was hurt tonight. If it was me I'd be saying an extra prayer or two tonight.....

Good point about "Good Looking " machines. Some of the big auction yards have painting on the site. On the first day of sale they are painting the ones to be sold the next day. New decals too.

Nothing like a good Dupot overhaul to cover up alot of things you don't want people to see. As for my self I pay extra attention to things on equipment that has a fresh paint job.

years ago, similar incident. Had old style VW bug & pull up to gas pump. Lady in front of me was standing by her Mustang with automatic transmission. No one was in her car but it was running, in park. I went around front of the bug & lifted up hood to put in gas (gas tank was under the front hood then) & stepped out from between cars. Suddenly the Mustang shot backwards & hit the bug! The bug bounced but stopped the mustang. That is scary. Would have crushed my legs if I hadn't had the luck to step clear for no known reason.

I am in the Anderson area. The auction was at the 32 mile marker off I-85. The little John Deere went for $7,750. I wish I could have been there to warn the new owner of its possible tranny problems.

David, I know where that sale is, but I have not attended it yet. I live in Spartanburg, just a couple of miles from the Kissimmee Auction Yard. They have 3 or 4 huge equipment sales a year.

When is the next Kissimmee auction do you know? I am really getting the itch for a little John Deere 450 loader, especially after missing 2 in the last week. Thanks, David from Seneca

David, I think that it will be either March or May before they have another sale at the Kissimmee Auction in Spartanburg. I will post it here when I find out. They have 2 pull-type road graders sitting out front, one on steel, one on rubber, I plan on stopping to take a gander at them one day. They do sell equipment off the lot, I am told, so if you would like , I will try to stop by one day soon to see if they might have a 450.
