i found an old d-8 today that im not sure what is wrong with it. the person i talked said that the owner was pushing with it and it started to pop and smoke and cause a big fuss. he also said it took a while to get it where it is now parked. it sounds kinda like heads to me but until i talk to owner i wont have any more info. was wondering what the going price for such a big machine is and how hard it is to find parts for it. i know it is relative to a lot of things but all i know now is it has been sitting for a year and was considered broke at the time of parking. i know moving them is a pain but i just want it for home use. i guess what i am looking for is a junk price.

I would start out by having the injectors tested. When you lose an injector the engine sounds terrible, starts knocking and smoking.

See if you can get the serial number off the back side on the left, or on the left side of the engine block towards where the operator sits, for I.D. purposes. Might be behind the starting engine, if so equipped. Check the archive section of the link below for S/N prefix's, print out the page for easy reference, see if you can match it on the tractor. You might want to measure the undercarriage components to see how worn it is, if really worn, + engine work, possible $$ better spent on another one in better condition. Not hard to do, just need to I.D. the tractor, get the U/C spec's when it was new, someone will have the information on the ACMOC site link below, take your measurements, compare figures, can then calculate percentage worn. if not familiar how to measure, see if you can find someone who can, or ask on the site linked below, it's well worth it, the eyeball method will not give you an accurate figure. You won't want to pay a lot for one with a worn out undercarriage and needing engine work, than it's scrap worth, to be honest. Wrestling with D-8 tracks after one has came off due to excess wear will not be a fun task. Undercarriage replacements often far exceed the value of the tractor, keep that in mind as well. Parts can be found, through Caterpillar, salvage yards etc. More familiar with the D7's but try over on the the antique caterpillar machinery owners website, (link below). There are a of of resources to search. See if you can get an accurate description of what happened when it was last running, if the U/C measures to still have life in it, you won't mind doing some engine work, but it's hard to say what's going on without more info. When you do, give a brief description as best you can, some of the guys over there may be more helpful with a diagnose. They'll need to know more than popping & smoking though, see what you can find out. Been a year so the trail will be cold, unless the owner can get it to run. Good Luck !
