I am looking at buying a mini excavator. Something made in the 90's in the 7000 lb class. Rubber tracks and I think an offset boom. I was thinking Hitachi or Kuboya. Any recommendation or advice would be appreciated.

I have a KX151 with hyd thumb, steel tracks. Its 12,000 lbs. Kubota is the largest manufactor of mini excavators in the world, They make all of it not like the other brands that purchases componets from several firms and bolt them to a frame. I think you should realy look at a Kubota. If you can get a 6 ton machine do so it will do more work.

I run Mini's for a commercial company. Round all the job sites I work, I see mostly takeuichi's, followed by hitachi and CAT's. Keep in mind rubber tracks dont last long on mini's. You will want the offset boom, and make sure you get a thumb as well.

I am also looking for one. I have put about 20 hours on my friends Deere 50ZTS and was very impressed. In the late 90's I think Hitachi made them for Deere and that may still be the case, so the mini's are the same just orange or yellow. I am only going to get something that has zero tail swing and an offset boom. Deere makes 3 sizes, 27ZTS 5 or 6000LB range 35ZTS 7500 LB range & 50 ZTS 10,000 range. Those #'s are off the top of my head.

Hitachi Construction Machinery has been making the Deere excavators since the '80s with the exception of the 690D and E. The Deere and Hitachi ZTS mini excavators are exactly the same with the exception of the paint. The larger excavators have some differences due to the Deere units utilizing Deere engines and the Hitachi's using Isuzu engines (with the exception of the Deere 600CLC, 800CLC and the Hitachi ZX600, ZX800). Both of these use Isuzu and are the same except paint.
