I have an early 1010C that needs the reverser rebuilt. It works OK for about 30min then it begins to slip going forward, reverse stays stong. How much would it cost for a complete rebuild, assuming everything inside is trashed? Are parts available.

Parts are available from Deere. Not counting any labor or updates, you can probably squeak by for around $1000 in parts if buying new. If any shafts or drums get replaced, the price goes up. 1010 reverser is pretty much the same as in the 350s. Front cover and pump setup is a little different and some bearings are smaller.

I was told that there is a JD shaft that will directly couple the engine to the transmission if the reverser is removed totally. This was installed in machines without factory reversers. Do you know what the part number is, or where i could get one. From all the postings on this board, reversers seem to be a weak link in JD crawlers.

The reverser was an option on the 1010s and 350s. I've got a 350 that is clutch driven, i.e. no reverser. I don't consider the reverser a weak-link. They're are pretty durable when in good shape. But . . . like anything else, they get worn, and once worn, are expensive to fix. They are not as durable in reverse as in forward, but I guess the thinking was that most heavy work gets done in forward? The 1010 and early 350 reversers were not as strong as the later units. When rebuilding, the older units can be updated to the later parts (with larger bearings). The straight-through shaft you mention for the 1010 is part # T14924. But, you need a lot more than that. You'd need a flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, clutch pedal linkage, etc. I can't see changing one over unless you find a parts machine somewhere. With that expense, you'd be better off fixing the reverser.
