I am in the process of rebuilding the motor in a Komatsu D37E-2.Engine is a 6D95L-6 cylinder diesel that does not have a turbo. This motor is not vented at all-no draft tube.In the komatsu shop and parts manual only the turbo version is vented to the atmosphere.Would it be worth it to vent it anyway-the valve cover has the correct bosses to knock out and it would be simple to do.Thanks for any help.

I found out from Komatsu that it does vent into the intake ports.Thats what the 3 brass tubes on top of the head are for. Thanks for the help guys.

I am very surprised that there is no breather,I am not familiar with that engine but I would bet that if it has not got an external one it has an internal one, otherwise it would be blowing the dipstick out or oil cap off,if you had no problem with it before you should have no problem with it now, maybe you should phone your Komatsu dealer to find out for sure.AJ

The crankcase must be vented,it could be vented to the intake manifold, there must have been a vent somewhere to allow any pressure that builds up to escape, what about the oil filler cap,I am close on 50 years in the repair business and have never come across an engine that had no vent except a two stroke. Believe it or not this thing is not vented. This is not my first rebuild job and at first I thought maybe I was missing something but another mechanic with a lot more experience than me couldn,t find any vent either.

That engine is vented internally through the head. There is a passage from the intake manifold side up into the valve compartment. I wondered myself years ago until I hooked up a water tube manometer and got about eight inches of vacuum.

Yes John C,I thought it would be somewhere like that, the old Listers and Petters we had in the UK were like that. AJ
