First of all, I want to say that this is a great site. I have been looking through it for a couple of months and reading what you all have to say especially about old TD9's and Case VAC's. I live here in SW Virginia and this is the first equipment of any kind that I have ever owned, or been around for that matter. My question right now is the winch...it needs a cable and and I do not know beans about what to buy and I assume that the leading end just lies in it's little place and rolls over top of itself for there is no HOLE in the reel. Just a little info about myself as a newcomer and one of many questions. Thanks to all that has a past in this site, for it is a GREAT ONE !!!!

I don't know about your specific winch, but most have either a hole in the reel or an indent. Winch cables can be bought with ends on them - usally just a little slug of steel. we also used to weld a nut on the end of cable to attach it, but it all depends on the winch. I used to work on a lot of logger's machines, mostly Deere. I've seen guys save money by buying reels of well drilling cable, and using it. It seems to work okay but frays faster. Carco/Braden/Gearmatic has a website with downloadable information at: Link

jdemaris: thanks for the response. I was just curious because mine does just have an indention and I did not or do not know if the cables lead end design is dealer specific or what because if a feller would run the cable out very far it would unwind on it's own and make a mess of things. I did go to the web site of CARCO and it did not have any info for me. Thanks again for your response.
