I saw a loader backhoe this weeend that said massey ferguson 40 on the loader arm. Is this an old machine, and if so does it have any common problems? seemed to have diesel engine, shuttle shift, rops, etc. I am thinking about a loader for the ranch and might buy this instead of the loader for an old case 811 on propane I already have there. rick in west texas

Rick, I have a M-F 40, I think it's a 1976, loader, backhoe, great tractor for the ranch. I have the rear tires about 3/4 full of water which is night and day difference for traction and stability. It has never failed to start, other than battery problems, it's been in the family since '77 I think. It is great on fuel and just goes and goes. It is not the greatest all around tractor, but it gets the job done, and it beats making payments. Keep the oil up and clean and everything greased it should last awhile.

thanks' the guy on the phone today says this is a 79 model with a recent engine overhaual. He wants 6500.00 for the machine. I noticed a number of welds on the hoe and he said he had replaced the bucket and hoe bucket with better ones. It is in fair condition so I might go and try digging with it to check it out rick
