I grew up on a small farm driving farmall equipment and was able to work with the neighbor driving a T9 International and old D6 with a cable blade. I have since been able to run a small Oliver (OC3 or OC4). I now would like to obtain or build a small dozer. What are some good old iron to consider in the OC3 size? Advantages/Disadvantages- cost/parts available, durability, etc?

i have a ih t4 crawler, it weighs 5000 lbs @ 27 hp. the t5 has 34 hp and the td5 diesel had 35 hp. according to nebraska test they out pulled deeres, case and olivers about the same weight. they came out in 1960 and were replaced by the 500 in 1965. they are a little hard to come by, plus you have to pound the ground for parts. somewhat reasonable priced.

If you are smart stay away from John Deere MC's and 40 Three rollers, Cletrac HG's & TerraTrac's GT-25,Gt-30's All harder to get parts for and not very strong.. John Deere

I can get parts just as easy and reasonable for my HGs and OC3s as I can for my Deeres. As far as being rugged goes, it IS what it IS for a light and small crawler, and the poster asked about OC3 size crawlers. I don't think Deere ever made a crawler that small or light. Maybe a Lindeman? MC weighs quite a bit more and has less horse. As far as being rugged goes, I don't think I agree. The little HGs and OC3s are pretty good. We used small crawlers in our sugarwoods for years, pulling sap tanks. We had Cletracs, 40s, 420s, (and a team of horses). The Deeres were geared and pulled better, but broke down just as much if not more. The horses were worse than any of the crawlers - every time I turned my back on them, they'd go back to camp. If I wanted a crawler just for pushing/dozing dirt, I'd take the Deere anyday over the Cletrac - but that's a different story.

HG or OC3 is pretty small and light (I've got a couple), but if it's big enough for what you want, I can't think of much better for the size and weight considering parts are pretty easy to get for it. That is, if your focus is a vintage machine. Maybe a Deere MC, 40C, or 420C has as good parts availability. There are a few others in that size range made by IH, AC, Terratrack(later Case) but parts are not as readily available. I'm sure there are new chinese and Italian diesel powered crawlers on the market if you want something new. A late HG or early OC3 weighs around 3400 lbs., has 24 horse, and a 132 c.i. engine. MC Deere weighs 4300 lbs., has 20 horse and a 101 c.i.engine, 40 Deere weighs 4700 lbs., has 23 horse and a 101 c.i. engine, and the 420 Deere weighs 5000 lbs., has 27 horse and a 113 c.i. engine (getting kind of beyond the little Cletrac range). The Deere crawlers all have a lower first gear for better pulling unless you get a Cletrac with the optional aux. trans. The Cletracs don't have steering clutches to worry about though, and the Deeres do. The weights I mention are crawler only, not including dozer weight or other attachements. Horsepower I'm quoting is belt, not drawbar.

Any of the ones mentioned above will work fine. I collect Deere, so will confine my comments to them. For a using crawler, I prefer a 420 over a 40 or MC. Physical size is about the same, weight is more, but you get 25% more power, and have the option of a reverser and dual hydraulics. May not be relevant to your particular situation, but they are nice options. Parts availibilty for the two cylinder Deere crawlers is very good. I have a wide variety of new and used parts available.
