I recently bought a 941 Caterpillar cralwer and have yet to get more than 1 continuous hour of work out of it before it over heats. Before I sent it into the shop the water temp and the oil temp were over heating. When I got it back out of the shop the water temp seem fine but the oil temp over heats after 45 minutes of use. Since I am a novice mechanic I would appreciate any suggestions on what to check. The mechanic at the shop replaced the fuel transfer pump, fuel filter, engine oil filter, transmission filter, and steering clutch filter. All the fluids were also changed. Does the oil temp gauge measure the engine oil temperature? The tracks are clean and are not to tight. I am in the process of checking the suction screen in the transmission now but I welcome any other suggestions on what to check.

I am assuming it is a powershift. The temp gage is converter temperature. If you aren't trying to push or dig in second or third gear,or are running at partial throttle,I would guess the converter is slipping heating up the trans oil. The converter will have to come out and be rebuilt or resealed. Have your mechanic check trans pressures and do a converter stall test.

A complete trans pressure test is the way to go. The only oil temp gauge is the TC temp gauge. You might try a new gauge first though if yours is not a cat gauge. TC temp is higher that water temp, the red line is 275 deg F. One more thing you should do is take off the LH side cover and and make sure the TC cooler lines are both hot all the way to the cooler and back to make sure you have oil flow to the cooler. I am guessing it is not the gauge because when the machine gets hot I loose power. Can you tell me where the oil cooler is or what it looks like so I can find it and trace the lines to make sure they are hot? Thanks for the help.

Ryan, I think your machine has an oil to water cooler mounter on the LH side of the engine behind the oil filter. It should be about 6" dia and maybe 18" long and have two 1" steel pipes connecting it to the trans. I don't think it has an oil to air one up beside the rad. If you follow the pipes back to the trans one will have the temp gauge connected there, that is the outlet line and the return line should have a lube valve on the trans end of it I think. Email me if you have more trouble. Later Bob
