I have a 1980 j.d. 450c dozer and want to change all the oils in it. What weight should the hyd. and trans. oils be? Can the same oil be used in both? Also it has a problem of some sort with the clutch packs I think, or maybe the pistons and o-rings. At times it won't back up or stops,( this is in all 4 speeds) pushing without pulling both steering levers back at the same time, then releasing them just right, then it'll back up a mountain side, or will push like crazy for it's size. Thanks for

Sounds like you'be got steering clutch problems. If you're lucky it's just the pressure valve adjustment. As far as oil goes, Hygard or any other combination transmission/hyrdraulic oil is fine for the trans. and the hydraulics. One thing, however, Hygard can sometimes be too thick for the hydruaulics in extreme cold weather. If you have below zero F. weather, you might be happier with regular hydraulic oil or straight 10W rather than the higher viscosity combination oil.

Victor, I run Deere's Hyguard fluid in my 350C's and my 450C. I use to use Union 76 hyd. fluid and now its eaiser for me to use Deere's, then when I use 5 gal I have a nice bucket afterwords. I was told by Deere that hyguard was ok for everything except engine oil. For that I run Chev. Delo 15-40. I am not clear on what your other problem is. Can you describe a little better what it is doing or not doing.

HOT OR COLD IT'S LIKE THE CLUTCHES ARE SLIPPING. NO STRANGE SOUNDS OF ANY KIND. IF I PULL BOTH STEERING LEAVERS BACK ALL THE WAY AT THE SAME TIME, THEN RELEASE ONE OF THEM WHILE HOLDING THE OTHER ONE BACK, WHICH LETS A TRACK SPIN, MOST OF THE TIME WHEN THE OTHER ONE IS RELEACED IT WILL TAKE OFF. IT'S MUCH WORSE WHEN BACKING UP, REALLY BAD WHEN BACKING UP HILL OR IN WET STUFF. IT WILL ALSO STOP PUSHING, DO THE SAME TRICK, IT'LL PUSH IT'S HEART OUT. I'M TELLING MYSELF TO PLAN ON A COMPLEAT OVER HAUL, MAYBE THEN IT WON'T TAKE ONE.

Victor, I am not sure what is causing this, but sounds like it could be some sort of pressure problem. Good luck.

That's a common occurrence with wet steering clutches on Deeres when the operating pressure is low, or they're are scored.
