Metal filings in transmission

My wheel loader has metal filings in the transmission fluid. Cat dealer thinks it's a bearing. Its on a CAT 910E loader. The Cat dealer wants $8,000 to rebuild it, 2400 to take out and put back in, 5600 to rebuild it. I don't use it that much, less then 70 hours a year. Do you think I can run it for several years before the transmission breaks? Then if I want to I can have it rebuilt. Any ideas?

Repair it now before the repair turns into 3-4 times the quoted amount. There should be someone in your area that does heavy equipment repairs besides the Cat dealer. If there are no other problems with the trans other that the metal chips, it shouldn't cost that much to fix it. Pull it out, clean it,re-bearing and reseal the whole thing now. Shouldn't cost more than $3500-4000.If you let it go,and you drop a shaft, and start tearing up hard parts then it will turn into a $10-12000 repair, not to mention the loader is dead where it sits and you have a really big lawn ornament at scrap price.

How long is a piece of string? They should be able to tell you fairly precicely, from an analysis, whether it is a bearing or gear or whatever. They also ought to know if one particular bearing fails most often. They are supposedly the experts. Ask them. It could become a catastrophic failure next time you use it. There again..... . I think you should get a second opinion and a second quotation from another repair house. Regards, RAB
