On other discussion boards I've heard of using WD-40 and propane as starting aids, either which are supposed to be easier on engines than ether. Some said that a "new" formulation of WD-40 doesn't work, but when I lit the spray from a new can, it burns great. Supposedly, new diesels have propane injection, which sounds like a good alternative. Using a little bit of any of them seems prudent. There are stories of ether causing serious damage (bent rods, etc.) as well as erosion of rings, etc. A whiff of ether may do no damage, but excess is definitely bad news.

you should have a place onthe throttle for cold start - it advances the timing in the injcetior pump. If it is not working you have problems in the injcetion pump and need to pull it to have repaired.
