Hello All, Today was the second day I have been able to get my 450 crawler out to do some grading on the farm. I'm pretty sure the machine has sat awhile before I bought it. Probably some months. Fluids are okay and its running pretty good except I think I've got a stuck left brake. I was running the crawler for about half an hour and used the brakes to stop on a hill (left brake since the right one does not yet pump up). Several minutes later I began noticing a "hot" smell and there was a "squeak" on the left side when stopping or starting off (but not while actually moving). I stopped the machine and noticed a little smoke comming up from under the seat near the brake assy. The smoke also smelled a lot like burning brake shoes. I've learned from various posts not to use the brakes on the 450 except in very tight turns or to hold on a hill and so I'm guessing here that the left brake is not releasing completely. The service manual suggests that the whole brake assy is pretty easily unbolted and removed from the machine for servicing. Am I right so far? Next, it appears that by turning the brake "shaft" that there are two disks with a metal ball arrangement that "expand" to press against the brake disks. I'm thinking that one of these balls may have fallen out and is lodged. The third possibility is that the hydraulics are stuck. I have not determined this to be the case though. Is there a known likely part of the brake system that will stick? Thanks! John

Is it possible that your emergency brake cable is frozen & holding the brake on? J Kirsch NY

Hello John, The parking brake came to mind but I've never used it. The thing that makes me suspecious is that I DID use the service brake a few minutes before it got hot... If it is the parking brake (like someone set it and then later moved the lever to the "free" position), then it's been sticking all along and I'm just noticing the problem. Thats possible. I have not used the machine much at all yet. Thanks for your input! John
