Link content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> ">Link I would like to purchase an older-model Case 450 track loader, so long as I can find one with all of the following:   - 75% or better undercarriage   - fairly tight loader assembly   - 4000 or less original engine hours   - no obvious major repairs necessary. I've got a few questions about the 450, though, and I was wondering what everybody thought.          1)  Do the torque convertors hold up over time?      2)  Did Case make any significant changes in the 450 models throughout the years of production (in other words, are there certain model years that I should steer away from, or were there major design improvements beyond a certain year?)      3)  Is the 450 known for developing brake problems over time? (presuming minimal operator abuse)      4)  If I find the above described machine, what is the reasonable price range? I'm located in East-Central PA, and I would be using the machine primarely for woodlot management and minor groundskeeping/groundmoving work; I am not a contractor.  Thanks in advance for any help or opinions. - G (BTW - I am not the generator of this inquery; rather I am typing this in for a relative of mine who has no experience posting on internet boards.  These are his words, dictated to me to be posted here.)

I've had my Case 450 for 8 years. Good machine. Forget about the brakes, you don't need them if you learn the machine well. I've never had brakes. The torgue convertor is the same as in the 850 tractors. You won't tear it up. Keep good filters on it. Watch all the levels. Don't pay too much.

Hey Mike D., please email me at bobb@coastal-foods.com if you have any ideas on the following: My cousin has a late 60's Case 450 dozer. A couple of months ago, he was using it, it was working fine when he shut it off. He started it a few days later, moved the shift levers to put it in gear to move the dozer, and nothing happens. It won't go into gear. Fluid level is fine, he changed the filters just in case, yet it still won't go into gear. He took the floor plate off and noticed that the drive line isn't spinning. Any ideas? Thanks, Bob Bauer

I just purchased basically the same machine you are looking for. I've got a 1968 model 450 track loader with a Drott 4n1 bucket. I also recently purchased a complete set of manuals from one of the friendly people you are likely to meet on this forum (Hello Jean Claude!). My experience with the machine is limited but so far I've been impressed with the overall design of it. Its simple and robust. I would argue that it isn't the most intuitive machine to operate (takes some getting used to if you are mostly used to using farm tractors) but after a few hours its okay. My 450 has a sticky left brake. From looking at the parts and service manuals the brakes appear to be easy to get to and service. Basically the brake assy unbolts and is serviced out of the chassis. I'm told to use the pedals only when making an especially tight turn or to hold on a hill. From what research I've done on the Case 450 I feel pretty good about the torque converter. I've never heard anyone say that it is a weak point in the machine. The 450 originally had a 188 cu in Diesel engine and later a 207. I've seen references to a gas engine as well but all I've seen are Diesels. The 207 probably makes more power but I'm happy so far with the 188. Generally my philsophy is to maintain it and you can expect good service from it. As far as price goes, I live in NC and paid $8000 for mine (before taxes). I purchased it from a used equipment dealer, hence the tax. The overall condition is worn but good. The U/C appears to be about 75% with some growser pad wear. The bucket has some minor welding and does not quite close all the way. The bucket will also drop very slowly when lifted. Some gauges do not work and the generator is not hooked up. Transmission and hydraulics all work. Engine starts quickly and runs well. Overall I don't think I got an exceptional deal, but a fair deal. Not many track loaders to be found around here for under $10,000 and those that are look to be in sad shape. Its my impression that the machine is front-heavy with the loader bucket unless there are weights on the back. Like you I bought it to clear land of small trees but I will do some digging and more weight in the back would be handy. Best Regards, John
