I'm looking at buying my first John Deere and my first backhoe. The machine is a 302A diesel with factory loader and backhoe. It does not have wheel weights or filled tires. Can anyone tell me the approximate weight? The owner says about 8000 lbs. It looks like alot more than that. It is a stout looking machine. Are there any special problems to look out for? There are no welds or stress cracks on loader or hoe It has 8 speed with reverser. Everything seems to work as it should with no strange sounds smoke or leaks. Cylinder rods have nice chrome. Don't know the hours as there is no tach or hourmeter, just a hole where they once were. I've seen 2 year old machines on dealer lots that look worse. He's asking $6500 and I think it should be worth it. What do you think?

I once was the proud owner of a JD302A Loader Tractor. My 302A had two wheel weight on each rear wheel and the loader would still lift enough to make the back end light, but with the backhoe you should be ok, more weight futher back a physics thing. Bought mine to do landscaping at my house and sold it after I was done. It didn't run when I bought it, repaired it my self, used it in a high profile area and sold it for more than they are asking for the one you are looking at. If the engine starts ok, the reversere doesn't slip, the hydraulic work fast, the hydraulic pump drive doesn't knock under a load and the steering valve doesn't get hot while you use it, then it should be an ok machine. I would check the transmission and hydraulic filters, if there is a grey slug ther could be a brake problem, good luck God bless.

Thanks for the reply Mark...I went to test drive it today. Most everything works as it's supposed to. the tilt on the front bucket was a little hard to find on the lever but it worked. Managed to get it stuck. We have so much ice that after I took it down over a hill I couldn't get it back up, even using the hoe to push it. I'll need to find a tach/hourmeter,ignition switch and seat somwhere but that shouldn't be too hard. Found a small leak in one injector line where it connects to the pump. I checked everything you suggested except the filters for sludge. Think I'm going to buy it, but still worried about weight Thanks again Jim
