I have a broken left axle shaft, that goes out to the final drive. Is is broken off about a foot in the spacer housing, whih leaves about 6 inches is sticking out to try and grab. What do I use to grab a 1 inch shaft through a 4 inch hole,12 inchs into it???? It is a big job to take the spacer housing off ,with the 1500 lb counter weight on it. Thanks Don L. ph 507 433 0073

TC's got the right idea. But I may be able to refine that a little. Using a piece of wire, something like heavy automotive wire (flexible)Double it over and slip it through a piece of tubing or electrical conduit and create a snare type tool. Slip the looped end over the broken shaft and pull the other ends of the wire till the loop is tight. If need be you can clamp a pair of vise grips on the ends of the wire to hold it tight. If you need parts we have some new aftermarket parts available.

i heard of a guy messing the transmission up on one by boring into a tree in 3rd gear. if that is the CASE im sure it could have strained that shaft to. but it is proably not the CASE here. don would know better im sure.. whats that i smell ???

Here is a trick I used on a dump truck with a similar broken axle problem. I took several strands of baling wire and made a loop at the end. Then put the wire into the axle housing over the broken stub. Then take a stick or something and twist the end to tighten the loop over the broken stub. You might have to put something in the housing to make it quit slipping around until you can get the twisting started. When it is sufficiently tight, it should grip the axle and you can pull it right out.

i'll second t.c.'s method, and just add that it should slip out easily, since its only a 6 spline shaft. mine came out very easily, just a tight spot where rust had accumulated due to water from a leaking seal. how in the world did you break the shaft in the first place???
