D6C 10k Undercarriage I’ve got a D6C 10K, 75-76 model. Starts and runs great, stirs good, good breaks, good power, all around good solid machine, 7300 hours on the meter. The undercarriage is dead. I had a Cat rep come out and check my rollers, idlers, etc, and he recommended tracks and sprockets only. The only other issue besides the tracks is I’ve got a leak in the final drive. I got a price quote of nearly 8,000 for new tracts, fixing the final drive leak, new sprockets including pickup and delivery. My question is, what is the value of this machine as is and what would the value be after I’ve invested another 8 grand? I don’t’ want to put more money into this machine than what it’s worth. As I said above, it’s a good solid machine, the Cat rep said it would be well worth installing tracks on, because it’s a clean machine, but of course he’s trying to sell me tracks to.

Roger I got a quote for tracks from CAT over $8000 went on line and found www.trekdirect.com and their tracks were less than half that. I have over 600 hours on them now and there is no visable or wear you can feel.

Another option is to buy a good used set of chains....there must be lotsa these units being wrecked, some would have good track gear on them. This option is best if you're not using dozer a lot.Good luck.

As you know rails, roller, sprokets make or brake a dozer. You have one of the best dozers made. If every thing else is in good working order, the rails, and sprockets only increase the value of the tractor,if the tractor its self is in good condition. Your tractor will keep its valve longer with the new rails and sprokets.

Thanks In Iowa, I've read many topics about the 10k's and that they hold their value, etc. etc. All is as I said, the dozer is in good working condition, other than the tracks and the one seal leak. Bob, replied via email and suggested that a new undercarriage on a good workable machine, especially the D6C 10k, that I have would be a good investment. And with the new undercarriage, I could get my investment back real quick with working it for others. I know things are worth what you can get from them, but is there a blue book value for dozers, like for cars? I've seen the 10k's same year model go from 20 - 35 grand, I guess it all depends on condition. I just didn't want to put a new undercarriage on something that wouldn't be worth the cost of the new undercarraige. Looks like the Cat dealers will get some undercarriage business from me.

Isn't CAT just useing Berco track parts with CAT on them?? I'd save some $$ and have a track shop do the track work with Berco parts. That's what i did on my dozer, and the Berco U/C on my machine is holding up very well!! Robert

Roger, post your undercarriage question over on the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club, been some discussions on CAT vs. Berco, I won't get into the details, or preferences, as its your call, but there are plenty of people on that bulletin board who deal with undercarriages, you should be able to get some additional detailed advice for your U/C, give the model, s/n of your D-6, and what you are looking at doing. Have heard nothing but good things about the C series. I have read some threads stating some dissatisfaction with Berco's products, some specific to certain components, whereas in the long run genuine CAT, although always a premium to buy, was money better spent due to reduced down time, especially with sealed components, if I remember correctly. Not trying to bias or steer your decision, just figured it might be of some help before you purchase. Good luck !!!
