my 1939 allis M has a problem with the left stearing clutch when it is under a heavy load. I have followed the directions of the operators manual, doesnt fix the problem. I have decided the first owner always went around the field clockwise and the pads on the left cluch are worn out. I have ordered a service manual, but it wont be here for two weeks. Can anyone tell me what to do or what not to do to get that clutch out to resurface those pads?

What is the actual problem with the stearing clutch? If it is slipping the manual tells you to wash the clutches with fuel oil or a sutible cleaning fluid.I use gasoline. I guess you could use paint thinner, but it will take a long time to dry Plug the drain hole in the bottom with a rag. It has a threaded hole for a 3/4 pipe plug, but a plug will not fit in the close space. The hole is visible when looking straight on from the rear. it is not on the very bottom. It is probably plugged with dirt and crud. The manual says to fill with cleaning fluid I use about 2-3 gal. run back and forth dont operate clutches. a few times. drain and fill again this time operate stearing clutches, and break a lot of times then drain. This will wash grease out of stearing clutch bearings so you will need to grease these. It also says to drain final drive, since some cleaning solution will have leaked into that. You dont want to take the stearing clutches apart if at all possible, a big job. Make sure the stearing clutch levers have free play. I have a few of the Model M's they are good tractors.Stan
