Hi everybody.. I need some expert advice.. I have a jd350b It has been running well but intermitantly has a problem pushing.. After I work for a couple of hours, sometimes it acts like the clutches are slipping, it just wont push very hard. If down shift the gear box, Or lower the engine RPM its a little better but problem is still there. Now I have noticed that if I shift forward, and reverse several times quickly the problem seems to go away for awhile. Just recently The problem has become worse . I had the slipping problem start after about 5 hours of work.. decided to put it away for the day.. started it up next morning and it did not want to move at all.. acted like it was stuck in a neutral position. after I screwed around for 15 min. It just slamed into gear and started working but acted like something was dragging the engine down.. almost stalled trying to move . Like it was engaging both forward and reverse at the same time. Today .. it started working normal, then I put the clutch pedal down and it just keeps going .. wouldint stop and I ran into the backhoe before I could get the switch turned off... ( sorry for the long story) anyway.. when it "Hooks up" Its real solid, but the shifting thing seem to be hard to predict... Q*UESTION... Is this a REAL problem with the reverser clutches or is it in the control portion. Am I really going to have to pull the engine and reverser... ANY Help would be much appreciated, Im not really into a major rebuild right now.. Unless I have to.. Thanks..

With the cold weather , could it be ice in the reverser fluid?

I've rebuilt many of them when I was a Deere mechanic, but there's too much to explain to be thorough. Think you need to narrow things down a bit. First of all, if pushing in the clutch pedal still won't stop the machine, try to ascertain if hydraulic pressure is actually being shut off when the pedal is in. Stick a gauge in the pressure port on the control valve asssembly. There are two ports, one is lube/release oil, and the other main clutch pressre. Lube oil is in the 20-30 psi range and main pressure oil is in the 120-150 psi range when the clutch pedal is up, and 0 psi when it's pushed down. So . . . if you find that the pressure does NOT drop when it's supposed to, then you have a problem in the control valve itself. It CAN be removed from the reverser without taking the reverser out. IF . . . you find that the pressure drops to zero as it should, but the machine still wants to go - then you got mechanical damage inside the reverser and it must come out. Warped dragging clutches will do it, so will a seized or trashed center bearing, etc. When you said the machine was laboring, like maybe being in forward and reverse at the same time . . . this can happen if one clutch pack is warped. E.g., if the forward pack is warped, it will labor badly when you put the reverser in reverse - and of course, vice versa. Torsional isolator on the flywheel coming apart is another common problem, but it would drag in forward and reverse.

While is kinda hard to tell without actually running the machine, it sounds like a problem within the reverser itself. However it could also be in the control valve, control valve linkage and or clutch valve linkage.
